Gallbladder problems anyone???

My baby is 3 weeks old and last week my husband rushed me to the ER because I was having intense pain in my ribs shooting through to my back.  I felt like I couldn't breathe and was really sick.  After an ultrasound we learned that I have several small gallstones in my gallbladder.  The doctor said that gallbladder problems are common in women during and after pregnancy and especially with rapid weight loss.  I am meeting with a surgeon tomorrow to discuss having my gallbladder removed and what my options are.  Anyone else have/had this?  Anyone not have gallbladder removal surgery and are fine now?

Riley is going to be a big brother to a little sister due April 19th!!!!

Re: Gallbladder problems anyone???

  • My mom had hers removed a couple years ago.  She had to have hers removed.  She can't process certain foods like she used to so she now has to take a medication to help with this.  Some foods, like greasy ones, will literally 'go right through you'.  The medicine seems to help though.  Having the surgery though was so much better than going through the pain for her.  Good luck!

  • My mom had this too, she would always get sick when I was a kid she would get really hot and end up laying on the bathroom floor and then of coarse the stomach issues. We never knew what it was until she started getting even worse. She thought it was something else and would get antibiotics and be better for a little while. Anyway one day she just didnt get better. Finally after a week or two in bed we drug her to the emergency room and they told us it had needed to come out ten years ago. She actually had to be fully cut open. If you get the surgery soon enough they just go in with 4 small incision points. They described the recovery if you wait as a little worse then having a c section. The simple surgery you recover much faster. The attacks are not fun at all and only get worse.

Sorry im sure thats not what you wanted to here, and possibly situations are different? Im not sure but if it happened to me I would just get it taken out.

  • Thank you, the info is helpful.  The doctor told me that the gallstones might dissolve on their own now that I'm not pregnant.  I'm curious to see what the surgeon says.  I do not want to spend my life waiting for another attack or wonder every time I eat something if it's going to make me sick.

  • My gallbladder failed 4 months after DS was born. I had no idea that it was something to watch for, but I began having attacks when he was just a few weeks old. I remember we had gotten fast food for lunch, and then at nighttime I was woken up by this pain radiating from my mid back to my chest. It lasted about 3 hours, and then either the advil kicked in, or it seemed to go away. By dec, I became very sick, thought it was food poisioning- couldn't keep anything down for 3 days, and had to be rushed to the hospital.

Mine was removed, and although the first year was rough, I haven't noticed anything since then, During the first year if I ate bacon or anything really greasy, I'd have stomach problems and end up running to the bathroom.  Now though, 2 years later, I don't notice anything different. With DS and now DD we do eat a lot healthier, but even a bacon egg and cheese or hamburger won't cause problems. Maybe if that was all I ate it would, but not too interested in that
