Montessori Floor Bed...at what age?

Please share your Montessori floor bed experiences with me:)

I currently bed share with DD who is 8 months old. It's getting difficult now that she is crawling and pulling herself up on the bed rail. I'm nervous that she'll topple over it while I'm sleeping. Also (and I'm really embarrassed to admit this) poor DH is stuck in the guest room as his snoring keeps DD awake. She HATES her crib so I'm thinking of just putting her crib mattress on the floor of her nursery. I would sleep along side her on a twin mattress until she gets used to it.

I've been researching the Montessori children's rooms and it looks like an amazing way to support not only the physical but also physiologic development of your child. I would love to hear some feedback and personal experiences please. How did you make the transition? How is it working for you? Any tips?

Thank you:)

Re: Montessori Floor Bed...at what age?

  • DD had a cosleeper attached to our bed for a number of months (I wanted to space, then was in our bed for a few months, and when she started crawling, I put our old mattress on the floor next to our bed and she's been down there (as have I, often), ever since.  It's worked fine - the normal amount of putting her back in bed until she learns she has to stay there, of course, but otherwise fine.  She's still in our room, though.

  • With DS we had a queen size bed on the floor for him from 8 months on.  I would lay down with him to nurse him to sleep and then start the night in my own bed, and go sleep in there with him when he woke up in the middle of the night.

DD has been in a twin bed since she was about 10 months.  She has a thin mattress on a wood slatted frame, so no box spring and I'd say its about 10 inches off the ground.  She had a tiny bit of trouble getting into it by herself when we first transitioned to it, but she never rolled out of it.  I just laid a buckwheat pillow by the side of the bed, and the other side is against the wall.  DH or I usually go in and lay with her until she (or we!) fall back to sleep in the middle of the night.
