Like this past weekend when they were making comments about Chris' meltdown? I told them to take a picture because it might last longer and went on to say something along the lines of "You've never seen an autistic kid in a meltdown before?"
I give them a nasty look and wave. I want them to know that I see them looking. Most of the time they turn away quickly. People are just so damn rude sometimes.
ETA: Funny story- One day we were at a pizza place and they have wooden booths. DS was excited and he was running back and forth on the booth. This lady sitting across from where we were was just staring at him in disgust (probably because he was pacing back and forth quickly on the booth) and I said, (loud enough for her to hear) "Nicholas, you are so cute that people like to watch you!" She quickly turned away. :-) And then DS yelled "HI!!!" lol I don't think he realized what was going on, but hi was a newly learned word and it was just so fitting. :-)

I just say "it's not polite to stare" and leave it at that. I hope that whenever I say it, they will learn from the experience and not do it the next time they run into a person with SN.
My go-to in this situation is to say to them "can we help you with something?" Most people are so embarrassed to be caught staring that they quickly go on about their business.
