Pregnant after 35

Painful Fibroids

Hello ladies. I have a very large subserosal fibroid on the right side of my uterus. It started aching and causing pain 3 days ago, on and off. Sitting and laying down make it hurt worse. So sleeping is not happening much and I sit at a desk all day.

My doc said there is nothing they can do but give my pain meds if the pain becomes unbearable. They said take tylenol, equivalent of nothing. How much tylenol in a row is ok?

Anyway, I am 10 weeks with twins and the fibroid is already distoring my insides. The doc said the heartbeats are alot higher up on my abdomen than usual since the fibroid is moving things around.  She also said parts of the fibroid can die off and that will cause unbearable pain.

Anyone have this problem? If so, did you get any relief and how long did it take??

Re: Painful Fibroids

  • Well since not one person replied.. I will update you on the outcome just in case any of you have this happen.

I couldn't take ther pain to I went to the doctor. She said now that the babies are growing, they are taking the blood supply from the fibroid and part or all of it is dying. This is causing me to have contractions.... yes, I am having contractions!!!!!!

She said this happens sometimes with large fibroids and usually around 15 weeks. She said even though I am 10 weeks, with twins I am really about 15... anyway. My contractions are about 5-8 mins apart and they are pretty intense. She is concerned of the intesity and frequency because I can go into labor if they don't stop!!!

Soooo, there is a medicine that they can give to stop the contractions, it won't stop the fibroid from dying but it cuts off the receptors or something and the contractons will stop. She said they usually only give it once in a pregnancy, however, they can give it twice if this thng doesn't die all the way and the rest diesat a later date. If they had to give it to me again, I would need to me monitored more closely than I am already. They don't like using it more than once but will if they have to. Said it was safe for the babies but I am still concerned. Thankfully it is working. I hope none of you have to deal with this if you have fibroids.

  • I do have fibroids, but your question is beyond an experience/knowledge I have on the subject.  I just wanted to send you my good thoughts...your situation sounds painful and a little bit scary (although it sounds like your doctor is good).  I hope the fibroid dies quickly and you can get back to just thinking of your two little ones.

  • I usually don't post but I saw this thread and wanted to share with you my experience as well. I was about 22 weeks when they found 2 fibroids, that at the time were only about 7 cm each. My doctor at that point told me the risks that were involved and said they would watch them closely. I started having EXTREME pain, as you described and tried to live with it- about 2 weeks later.   I wasn't able to sit, walk, stand, sleep. I usually handle pain pretty well but this was unbearable. I couldn't take it any longer and my husband called my doctor and had to rush me to Labor and Delivery (doctors orders) immediately.  Once I got to the hospital- they did a full check and thought I was going into labor. They started me on pain meds- per my doctor. I did not want to take the meds but my doctor said the stress of the extreme pain was just as bad for the baby.   They said the pressure at my birth canal felt like I was about to give birth to a 9 lb baby. Once they got my pain under control, they did another ultrasound and the fibroids had merged and now measured 18 cm.

My doctor also told me that the pain could come from the fibroid dying off in the middle, however, it can still grow from the outside. Also she mentioned that the pain was my body thinking I was going into labor- even though I never contracted.  The pain medicine helped and I have very strict orders from my doctor- not to exercise and to come home and immediately put my feet up to take the pressure off. She tried to put me on bed rest but I am going to be a working mother and needed to be at work.   I have an ultrasound about every other week.  It was growing at a rapid pace and last time my doctor checked, it said it probably weighted about 8 lbs.  She was trying to make sure I got to 34 weeks and thankfully I am 35 weeks and my baby boy seems to be oblivious to everything going on and it measuring right on to where he needs to be.  My doctor gave me pain meds to take during my pregnancy but thankfully I only had to take a couple. I had a couple more "episodes", as my OB calls them, after the rushed ER visit but nothing as intense as that day.  I am heeding the doctors advice and taking it as easy as possible.

I will have to have a cesarean section because the fibroid is blocking my birth canal and the risk is too great if I were to try to have a natural birth. At first I was disappointed but now that the time is nearing- its nice to know the day I am going to have him! They check me every week to see if the fibroid is taking all his nutrients and if he is continuing to grow and so far so good.  I will have to have surgery to remove the fibroid but not for a little while. It should shrink once I start breast feeding.  One thing my doctor prepared me about is the fact I will still look pregnant because I will have a 9 lb fibroid still in my uterus.

I am sorry this is a long post but when it first happened to me I found comfort in knowing other were going through the same thing.   My doctor said that the pain from the fibroid when you are pregnant is one of the most extreme pains you will ever feel. Hang in there and know that eventually it does pass.  I took lots of baths and thankfully it is the summer and I could enjoy the pool. Find ways to relieve the pressure.  Good luck!
