Babies on the Brain

Aflac Supplemental Insurance?

I recently heard a little about Aflac supplemental insurance. I don't know many details but my understanding is they will pay you for 6 or 8 weeks after having your baby so you don't have to work. Does anyone have any experience with this or know any details? It sounds almost too good to be true. If it is actually legit though I would want to sign up for it before we start TTC later this year.

Re: Aflac Supplemental Insurance?

  • I have heard it is very expensive but my friend who used it her work paid for it
  • I had it and it was not expensive at all.  Less than $25 a month.  It was great when I had DS!  I don't remember how much I got, but it was a pretty decent amount.  You have to have the plan in effect for a certain amount of time before you can get pregnant, so look into it right away.

  • You pay a premium per paycheck based on your income. You chose a waiting period, such a 0/7 - it kicks in immediately in the event of an accident, or 7 days after the beginning of a sickness (which pregnancy falls under). The longer your waiting periods, the cheaper the premium, so a 7/14 plan would be cheaper than a 0/7.

The plan will not pay for pregnancy related disability within the first 10 months.

During your disability period (6 weeks for vaginal delivery, 8 weeks for C/S), you receive 60% of your gross income. The premium is deducted post-tax, so the money you receive is tax-free. My plan also allows me to return to work part-time (less than 20 hours per week) for up to 12 weeks while still receiving a partial benefit from Aflac. Once I go back full-time, it ends.

I agree with all of this.  It's called a short-term disability policy and yes, it's legit.

I "bought in" to this AFLAC policy back in December because we are TTC this year.  You will not get any benefit if the policy is not in place 9 months before you give birth.  So, in other words, you can't be pregnant and then get the policy.  You have to have it in place beforehand.

  • Thanks for all the info, ladies! It definitely sounds like something I need to look into as soon as possible so that I'm signed up far enough in advance to qualify.
