Today was my second ultrasound. We saw the baby and heartbeat but my RE said that the yolk sac is large which usually signifies a genetic issue with the baby. He also was not happy with the heartbeat (didn't tell me what it was). He said he didn't think this pregnancy would last much longer and that he wanted to schedule a D&C for next Thursday. I was in shock and asked some questions but have since written down many more to ask. I told him I'd like to have another ultrasound before the D&C to make sure.
I have another ultrasound on Monday.
This will be my 5th miscarriage. 3rd in a row. I thought for sure this would be a good pregnancy. I have felt exacly like I did with my son. SO tired, hungry, emotional, bloated, etc...
What would you ask your doctor? Any thoughts?
Update- I called my doctor's office to ask what the fetal heart rate was and the size of the yolk sac. The nurse called me back and said he does not measure the fetal heart rate but just listens to it and that he doesn't measure the yolk sac. SERIOUSLY!?! Those things make a difference and mean something! I'm going to ask him to tell me the heart rate on Monday and ask to be refered to a MFM specialist. I don't like how this doctor relies so heavily on his "gut" feelings and that he wants to schedule a D&C with the heart beating. This is so frustrating! He is supposed to be the leading fertility specialist in my state and I feel like I am just a lab experiment to him!
Re: UPDATE: Upsetting 2nd U/S today and large yolk sac... D&C scheduled.
I'm sorry I don't have experience with this problem, but personally, I don't know that I would schedule a D&C until there was no HB, or there was a definitive answer as to what was probably wrong. I would definitely call tomorrow to find out what the HB was, because it would drive me nuts not knowing.
I would ask the Dr. what kind of genetic issue he thought it was, and what would happen if you let it go a bit longer to see if things straighten themselves out.
Good luck with your u/s on Monday, here's hoping the HB is stronger and the yolk sac isn't so large.
ETA: I also agree with possibly getting a 2nd opinion. It certainly can't hurt.

All of the above. I would try and get a second opinion. I would ask your doctor what he thought the issue was and how it will affect the baby. Definitely get a check on the heartbeat. Hope everything turns out okay! ((Hugs))
Thanks Ladies-
I will be making a phone call to his office tomorrow. There were so many questions I had but when he gave me the "I'm so sorry look" and started explaining about the yolk sac, I was a sobbing mess.
DH and I talked/cried it out on the way home and came up with a list of questions to ask.
I agree with all of this. Praying for some good news for you.

Personally, if I had a heartbeat, not only would I schedule another ultrasound, I would also think really hard about getting a second opinion. When he says "usually signifies" a genetic issue, to me that is pretty vague and I wouldn't in conscience be able to terminate the pregnancy on that.
I am so sorry you are having to go through this.
I am so sorry
I agree with all of the PP though... I would ask your questions asap, definitely do your u/s on Monday, and possibly go see another dr. for a second opinion. I would not give up until there is no HB. Even though MOST of the time a large yolk sac means a genetic issue, doesn't mean it's DEFINITELY what this case is.
I'm sending many T&Ps your way, and hope you get all the answers you need!!

I would totally recommend a second opinion. I also have copied a link of women who were told the same thing and ended up with perfectly healthy babies.
It is truly amazing because the medical sites online give NO HOPE whatsoever for a large yolk sac and yet we've now had several cases of women go on to have a perfectly viable pregnancy. I found this on https://www.misdiagnosedmiscarriage.com/mycommunity/viewtopic.php?t=7244
"For other women who are looking for hope here is one of Stacy's threads. She went through the same thing and had her perfect little baby

Also MsTulip who had her beautiful little girl:

Just goes to show, the literature doctors read is not always correct. A large yolk sac does not necessarily mean a miscarriage. We need to get that word out because doctors do convince women to have D&Cs as a result of that diagnosis."
Good luck. I hope things work out well for you. <HUGS>

December 2009 - Diagnosed with bicornuate uterus.
My third loss involved a babe with a large yolk sac. Things didn't work out, but what I was told is that a large yolk sac is a bad indicator, but is not definitive. For me, the HR was also <90 and baby wasn't measuring the correct size. I would ask to wait it out. There is no rush to schedule a d&c. Sometimes I think doctors really down play the risks of D&Cs.
Im so sorry you are going through this... there are success stories out there, but no matter the outcome be sure to take care of yourself.

Here is a study on large yolk sacs and viability of pregnancy. They say that a heartbeat is a good sign and that a large yolk sac can be present in a healthy pregnancy. I definitely would not have a D&C while there was still a HB. There isn't a rush, so don't ever feel pressured into a D&C. I hope that your follow up has good news.

All of this! Very rarely is a pregnancy textbook - I would get a second opinion especially if he was recommending a d&c with a hb and you are unsure of exactly why other than that is what he thinks. GL to you!

This.
I just wanted to come in to echo what everyone else has said - get a second opinion and do not agree to a D&C while there is still a heartbeat unless you KNOW there is a problem.
Many doctors seem way too quick to pull the trigger on D&Cs and you are entitled to getting as many answers as you need before consenting to one.
Hugs. I know we have a very similar history so I just wanted to say that I'm so so sorry you are going though this stress right now.
