Babies: 3 - 6 Months

tummy time = grumpy time??

My 5 month old has never really been a fan of tummy time.  Now that he rolls over he REALLY dislikes it.  I can get on the floor with him, give him his favorite toys and tried new toys - he just gets more upset the longer I leave him there.  I can't put him on his play gym or blankets at all if I'm not blocking him from rolling because now that he can roll he immediately does it.

Anyone else's LO get grumpy?  Any ideas? Do I just let him fuss for a few min before picking him up or putting him back on his back??  My other DS loved his tummy time so I feel like I'm at a loss for new things to try for DS2.

Re: tummy time = grumpy time??

  • I was trying to do tummy time right before DD eats next (or when I think she will anyway).  That way when she got frustrated, the milk would calm her down.  I always roll her over when she fusses during tummy time.  Now, she doesn't mind tummy time as much as will stay there for nearly 10 minutes without fussing.

  • This sounds like my DS too.  Once he gets rolling, it's hard to get him to take a break, so I can't leave him on his playmat or blanket either.  However, DS only gets upset once he gets tired and can't hold his head up anymore, and can't roll himself back onto his back.  That's my job for now!

The only suggestion, other than toys (which you already do), is to put a mirror in front of him.  My DS loves to look at himself in the mirror and has been known to smile up a storm, even on his tummy.  It buys me several minutes before I need to "rescue" him again!  :)

  • Mine hates tummy time too.... I'm lucky for 2 min.  I don't think it's a big deal as long as you keep providing opportunities for them to stregthen their neck...I use the bobby to prop him up throughout the day.... hope this helps :)
