2nd Trimester

My first Charley Horse last night!

I should say the first of this pregnancy! Goodness do they hurt!!  It wasn't even a bad one since I caught it as it was happening and it didn't go to far.  Not looking forward to more!

Let me start by saying this is my first pregnancy...but so far it has been my experience you will have more.  I usually have a couple each week and have been since about week 15.  I'm tired of getting them but I don't know anyway to prevent them.  Pre-pregnancy I would eat a banana and that would be it (low potassium) but it doesn't seem to work now.  Good luck and hopefully they won't be too painful.

  • Boo. I get these too, usually a few nights a week. Not fun to have to get up and hobble around the room in an atempt to work it out.

  • I was getting leg cramps quite a bit around 16 weeks, and my Vit D was low.  I started taking a supplement (directed by my MD) and they've gone away.  I'm not totally convinced that's what caused/solved the problem, but it might be worth asking about if yours get out of control!

  • I got these so bad with my first pregnancy and now it has already started with this pregnancy also.  I used to think it helped to stretch and point your toes down, but I learned that the best way for quick relief is to point your toes up toward you.  Stretch your leg out as straight as possible while trying to point your toes up and toward your face.  It seems like that makes it hurt worse for just a split second, but then the pain just begins to fade and melt away right away.

  • Drinking a lot more water usually helps to prevent them.

  • They wake me out of a dead sleep.  If I point my toes when I stretch I get them, every time, so I don't stretch my legs anymore.  Weird...

  • I had issues with these pre-pregnancy, years ago as well, and like a previous poster mentioned, a banana a day did the trick.  When I moved to FL and was drinking a LOT of water in the summer, they flared back up.  Too much water can cause an electrolyte imbalance and create those cramps as well.  So, a packet of electrolytes in my water a day did the trick.  Since moving to PA a year ago, haven't needed that or the banana every day, just a few times a week, or mostly when I was traveling a lot.

Now, pregnant, they flared up again at about 14 weeks.  What works for me is a banana a day AND electrolytes.  Either a gatorade/powerade or a packet of electrolytes in a bottle of water and I haven't had a single cramp.  Might be worth a shot, with the extra vitamins and fluids you intake during pregnancy, could just be an imbalance.

  • I woke up the other night with it in one leg, then woke up with it in the other leg. I couldn't walk and cried it hurt so bad. My husband freaked out lol. I was like "Its ok!!!" They suck :( Drink lots of water! Also, It helps to stretch them out when you get them. Just try your hardest to stretch the leg (if that is were you get them!) :)
