2nd Trimester

A/S today, mostly good but have one little issue

Copied from my BMB:

So I had my A/S this morning and we are having a girl:) According to the Dr. her measurements are right on where they should be. Most everything is normal, except one thing, she has an echogenic focus on the left side of her heart. I've already done tons of research, even before I knew our baby has this, and I know that it doesn't mean that she will *for sure* have something wrong with her. But it's hard not to be a little bit worried. We have a repeat U/S in 6 weeks to check if its gone, which the Dr. said she is almost 99% sure it will. Just need some prayers these coming weeks! I got some really cool pics of our precious daughter:)

So all in all it was a good day....just this little cause for worry! Has anyone heard of just having one soft marker and everything being fine? Or the opposite?

  • Did your doctor see you immediately after the A/S? I'm curious because the tech sent me home and said if anything was wrong, the doctor would tell me at the appointment next month. I wonder if that's normal?

Also... what's already asked is already done. Your baby has plenty of growing to do, and I'm sure she'll be 100% perfect when she's done baking in her private oven. ;)

If your little girl is otherwise healthy in the US other than the echogenic focus (also called EIC: echogenic intracardiac focus) than she will almost surely be fine. :)  It is very common to have EIF seen in US.  I am an  US tech and it is very commonly seen. 2 previous coworkers have found EIF's in their own babies, and both babies were perfectly healthy and adorable. Also, I answered a question last week from  another bumpie asking the same thing as you as her baby had an EIF at the 20 wk scan.

What I told that previous bumpie and will tell you is, first of all, relax and don't worry. :)  You are correct that it is considered a "soft marker" for Trisomy 21 (aka Down's).  What "soft marker" means is that sometimes with babies with DS have these signs in US...but often it is just a random event in an otherwise healthy pregnancy. Other examples of soft markers are choroid plexus cysts (in the brain) and echogenic bowel.  The criteria to even begin to worry about baby having DS is that there must be AT LEAST 2 soft markers, if baby only has one we really don't get concerned. So if everything else with your DD was perfect--I wouldn't be worried as the chance for her to have DS is miniscule, especially if all your other tests/bloodwork came back normal. Also, an EIF is not a heart defect, more like a bright spot, we just don't know what caused it.

Try to relax. Hope the info helps. Congrats on a girl!  Girls are so much fun! :)

  • I had the same issue with my baby. It was a little scary, even though I also had done my research and knew it can be very common. Our repeat u/s showed everything is fine. But just so you know...my doctor said that it might not go away, but will not necessarily cause any problems. So if you still see it in 6 weeks, don't worry about it.

  • An echogenic focus is so common that most doctors do not consider it to be a soft marker anymore, especially in isolation.  I'm sure you have nothing to worry about.

If the Dr. Is not worried I wouldn't worry either! They tell you the truth and do not sugar coat anything. Try and stay positive!!! Thoughts and prayers are with you!

  • My LO has a choroid plexus cyst on one side of her brain and it is also considered a soft marker. I know my heart sunk when i got the news and I worried like crazy so I totally understand how you feel! I am having my follow up US next week so I will let you know how it goes. Chances are everything is fine but I know it's hard not to worry!
