We use one with my 2 year old just for potty training. She gets one sticker for peeing on the potty, two for pooping (which she has yet to do). After a set amount of stickers she earns a "prize" - baking with mom, going out for ice cream, etc., working up to buying big girl undies.
I've also heard of them being used to encourage a child to stay in bed at bedtime, brush teeth, remember to wash hands, that kind of stuff.
