While these are good things to ask about, I think the language in the article is a little strong. Just because one study suggests a certain treatment may not have the benefits we assumed doesn't mean women should substitute the judgment of... The editors of Consumer Reports? or their own judgment or believies for the informed professional judgment of their healthcare team.
I feel like a lot of things revolving around birth that are "routine" are unecessary. I am not sure how they became routine, but just becuase something is routine doesn't mean it is always the best option or even necessary.
I'm not a fan at all of procedures that are done for convenience.
