Crazy sleep patterns

My son turned 3 months on the 24th.  in all of the literature that I have read it states that they should be settling into a more consistent sleep pattern.  He was born 6 weeks early but has met most of the developmental milestones except that his sleep pattern is so crazy!  We have created a pretty routine bedtime schedule and that works well unless his GERD is acting up.

However, his waking times in the night for nursing and daytime naps are not consistent at all.  I listen to his cues and let him sleep whenever he shows signs of tiredness and have not yet tried to create a more regular nap schedule since most text advises to wait to create a sleep schedule until 6 months of age.  My questions are these: Does your LO display the same irregular sleep patterns? Have you tried at all to create a sleep schedule this young, and if so, have you been successful?

My LO was 2 1/2 weeks early and is hitting his milestones as well.

During the day his sleep is all over the place. Some days he takes a bunch of cat naps. Some days, like today, he sleeps hours at a time. When we try to start a routine, he just isn't having it. We haven't started letting him CIO yet though...

  • My little guy is all over the place too (see earlier post about tracking Ben's naps).  I'm just starting to keep track to see if any patterns emerge, but so far, he's all over the map - some days it's long naps, some days it's short naps.  The times are all over the place from about 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.  I figure he'll start to settle into a pattern eventually.  I haven't tried making a schedule for him yet.  I'm going to give him some more time to try and set his own.
