I got one for my mom back in 2003-2004 ish for a gift. I of course was not living with my mom at that time and she is not very techice but It was not a good gift (for her).
She kept saying that it would get stuck, circle the same areas and not go to new areas. (I don't know if it is misuse or a poor product design) Eventually it stopped holding charge and she threw it away.
Now with that being said she really is not techice. She complaned that the infered walls did not work when I eventaully found out she did not turn them on!
So I would recommend that you find a place with a long retrun period so you can try it out for a few weeks and return if necessary. I too have been thinking about getting one just this past weekend. Technology has changed/improved a lot since then and there are a few others on the market now besides the iRobot one.

They just had one on 1saleaday.com yesterday. If you are not in a huge hurry to get one you could watch for it to be sold there again at a discounted price. I have seen it listed quite a few times.
We have a Roomba. It works really well for what we use it for. We run it everyday (it is on a scheduler, so it runs everyday on its own), but every once and a while we still have to bring out the big vacuum once in a while for corners and big messes.
