WCM

So this board is so dead I was even lurking on the June 11 board and there were many posts about wcm so I'm curious as to where your LOs are at with wcm.  Our pedi said that no need to start gradually that I could start offering little bits here and there (he just had wcm less than a week ago for the first time) and that if I came back for his 15 mo wcc saying he was still not on wcm it would be ok since I'm still BFing. DS only drinks a couple sips from his straw cup when I offer it a meals times and turns out he likes it cold.

 So I'm just curious ...

When  did you start intruducing wcm? Did you wait for pedi to give the ok?

How much does LO drink now?

Organic or conventional?

Do you warm it up or serve it cold?

Not doing wcm? Why not and what are you using instead?

Re: WCM

  • When  did you start introducing wcm? We haven't introduced it yet and don't plan on it until DS drops to less than 4 BFing sessions a day.

How much does LO drink now? 0 cow's milk but he does get some of either plain whole milk yogurt or cheese most days.

Organic or conventional? We already do organic ourselves for many reasons, so DS will get organic.

Not doing wcm? Why not and what are you using instead? kellymom reports that if toddler is BFing at least 3-4x/day, there is no need to give additional wcm. DS does well more than this and we're planning on letting him self wean up to 2, maybe 3yo. When he does drop to <4 sessions, we'll think about starting then but I also may pump up until 2yo. BM is still a more complete source of nutrition (and antibodies) than wcm, so if I still have it, I hope he'll get it. Not to mention it's still a lot cheaper than wcm. I'm not sold that cow's milk is such a magical substance that the dairy council and USDA want us to believe. Americans probably drink/eat dairy the most in the world and still have the some of the highest rates of osteoporosis (among many other things). I'm not going to deny DS dairy products, but it seems a varied diet high in fruits/veggies/high quality protein and lots of weight-bearing exercise will be more protective than pushing cow's milk. I'm a registered dietitian and there's a lot of data that back up our decision to delay replacing bm w/ wcm. The jury's still out for me whether I feel that humans should be drinking non-human milk at all at any age. I think that some of my issues (chronic congestion, acne) may be related to dairy.

That was a long way of saying that if BFing is still going well for you, you still want to continue, and you're meeting the minimum sessions, there is no need to switch to wcm yet. • We just had DD's 12 month check up last Friday.  Doc said that you don't have to transition from formula to milk, as in milk isn't toddler formula.  He said it's important that she get enough calcium but that can be through cheese, yogurt, etc & not just milk.  He said not to force it on her.

We have dropped her bottles & formula as of this weekend.  She has done fine without them.  She has drank milk from her sippy but she also gets cheese and/or yogurt daily.

Also, our doc said that we can give her whatever milk we drink so it doesn't have to be WCM.  I understand all docs are different so talk to yours to see what is best for you & your lo.

  • When  did you start intruducing wcm? Did you wait for pedi to give the ok?

We started a few days before his first birthday. I mixed 1-oz WCM with 5-oz BM in his bottles and gradually upped the ratio until he was drinking only WCM. I also took the opportunity to drop one of his bottles.

How much does LO drink now?

He has four 5-oz bottles of WCM a day.

    Organic or conventional?

    conventional

Do you warm it up or serve it cold?

I have tried giving it to him straight from the fridge but he won't drink it. So I just warm it to room temperature.

Overall, it was a really easy transition for us. And I EP, so I was really happy to be able to put the pump away! Getting him to drink from a sippy and not a bottle is our next hurdle.

  • Our pedi said if my BM supply was low at 11+ months, we could start gradually mixing it in. We maybe mixed it in a handful of times (half and half) the last couple weeks of him being 11 months old. Once he turned a year, I stopped pumping and we were doing half and half until my freezer supply ended.

He now drinks a 4-5 oz bottle when he wakes up in the morning, after he wakes from his nap, and before bed. He is offered a sippy of wcm at lunch and dinner also, but doesn't drink a ton of it. I am hoping to transition the bottles to sippies once he drinks more from them.

    Conventional

Bottles are warmed up, although not as warm as we used to do his BM. Sippies he drinks it cold.

When  did you start introducing wcm? Did you wait for pedi to give the ok?A week before she turned one.  No. How much does LO drink now?She still gets 8 ounces of formula with breakfast and then about 6-12 ounces of WCM the rest of the day.  It just depends.  She gets water with snack.Organic or conventional?Homestead Creamery non-homogenized WCM (organic).  It's the only brand we're comfortable giving her until we can find a local source.Do you warm it up or serve it cold? We warm it just slightly. Not doing WCM? Why not and what are you using instead? We weren't going to and were opting for almond milk, but I talked to Lisa Leake (of 100 Days of Real Food) and she recommended Homestead Creamery.  We'll probably end up giving less than 16 ounces of milk a day and making up for it with other dairy products.

  • When did you start intruducing wcm? Did you wait for pedi to give the ok?

We did it after DD's 1y appt.  He told us to stop all bottles and formula and give WCM with meals and water with snack and through out the day.

How much does LO drink now?

She is probably getting about 14oz a day.  She also gets other dairy like yogurt and cheese

    Organic or conventional? Conventional

Do you warm it up or serve it cold? she will drink it either way I usually warm it a little but DH gives it cold

Not doing wcm? Why not and what are you using instead? N/A

  • E's birthday was yesterday, but we've been giving her some (conventional) milk for a couple weeks.  It was 1-2oz mixed with her formula.

She loves it but it made her really constipated, so we are back to mostly formula.  She has her 1yr appt tomorrow so I'll talk to the dr about her recommendations.

  • My supply tanked and I had enough to satisfy her most of the time when I wasn't on my period but I couldn't get enough for the one bottle she needed for daycare so we started supplementing a little WCM around 9 1/2 / 10 months with breast milk.  I did not wait for my pedi's okay.  I tried her with spme, saw she had no reaction and went with it.

She only has around 2-8 ounces a day of it.  More towards the two.  We nurse 3 or 4 times a day still and I give her 2 ounces of WCM with breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Some days she barely puts a dent in the 2 ounces.  Tonight at dinner she sucked them down fast.

Right now we are giving her the regular ole stuff we buy.  But I may change it up.  She drinks it cold.

  • When  did you start intruducing wcm? Did you wait for pedi to give the ok?  First introduced it around 10 months when my milk supply tanked. I did not consult the pedi before giving it to her. I mixed it with frozen BM until my freezer stash was gone and BF twice a day. My breasts completely dried up when she was about 11 months old. So she has been on just WCM since then.

How much does LO drink now? She drinks between 16 and 24 oz a day

Organic or conventional? Just regular whole milk

Do you warm it up or serve it cold? She drinks it cold

  • DS has a dairy allergy, so we're giving him coconut milk instead. He still nurses 5x a day, so I just give him a small cup of coconut milk with either lunch or dinner (and a cup of water with the other meal for more cup practice). I'm not sure how many oz it is, but probably only about 2-3. I want him to get used to drinking it with his meals before I wean him. We just started the coconut milk a few days ago; we had done soy milk for a week before but decided to switch. We did get the ok from his pedi at his follow-up apt regarding his allergy. And he likes it cold.

When did you start intruducing wcm? Did you wait for pedi to give the ok? Started OWCM just past 11 months, Dr didn't say anything about it.

How much does LO drink now? DS gets about 16 oz of milk. @ sippy cups and one bottle at bedtime

Organic or conventional? Organic. Although Canadian standards are different for milk than American according to my research,

Do you warm it up or serve it cold? Make it room temp usually, he will drink it if it's cold, but isn't a big fan.

Not doing wcm? Why not and what are you using instead?

When did you start intruducing wcm? We tried at about 11 months, mixing half and half with formula but she was throwing most of it up so we went back to all formula. Just this past weekend, I started putting 2% in her bottles, mixing it half and hlaf with formula. She seems to have taken to it better this time. We'll continue this until she's on all 2% and then reintroduce the WCM into the bottles.

Did you wait for pedi to give the ok? I had to take her in for croup at the beginning of May, and I asked if it was ok then, the Dr said yes. We made the decision to go back to 100% formula and then do the 2%/formula mix on our own. Her 1 year well visit isn't until next week, so we'll talk to the Dr about it then.

How much does LO drink now? About 4 6 oz bottles a day.

    Organic or conventional? Conventional

Do you warm it up or serve it cold? Cold, but the formula is room temp.

Not doing wcm? Why not and what are you using instead? See explaination for 2% above. :)
