3rd Trimester

Anyone done a 24 hour urine test? How much did you pee?

I had my 40 week appointment today and my doctor wanted to do blood work and a 24 hour urine test because my blood pressure has been slightly elevated. They gave me a 3,000 mL container for the 24 hours, and I've already filled more than half of it (about 1,600) ... And I'm only 7 hours into the 24 hour period. I guess I'll be calling in the morning to see if I can come get a second container because I know it's important that they get the full amount of urine over the 24 hour period.

Has this happened to anyone else??  If you've done a 24 urine collection, how much water do you drink and how much did you pee?

  • I had to do one about 3 weeks ago, and the container they gave me was 4,000 mL and I filled it to the brim. Unfortunately for me, the lab couldn't determine my results accurately bc I had such a "high output of urine". They couldn't tell if my results were normal bc I actually had a normal level of protein, or if it was normal because my pee was too watered down (I drink a LOT of water). I went through all of this drama with my dr. about why I drink so much and why I had so much urine output. They made me retake the test and cut my fluids in half on the day that I took the test again. I'd just call in the morning and see what they say about how much you have. It sucks to take the test once, but to have to do it twice is even worse. Good luck!

Haha, this is what I'm worried about!  Good to know I'm not the only one who drinks and pees a ton.

  • I drink a ton of water, and my container was 3000 mL and I filled it to the brim and didn't have any room to put my final "pee" of the 24 hours!

  • I filled the first container by lunch, called the lab, and they had me go pickup another which I almost filled to the top. My husband was horrified that there were 2 jugs of urine in the fridge for 24 hours. Haha.

  • I did one but I can't for the life of me remember the size of the container... I think I only filled about 1/3 of it.

  • I actually had to do it twice. The first time I was only given one container, and it was filled in less than 12 hours. When I took it back to the lab I was told that the first and last voids were the most important and if I didn't collect those, then I had to do it over again. So I did it this past weekend, this time with two containers. I'm not sure what the test is for though.

Well, I filled the entire container at 4:00 a.m., about 12 hours into the 24 hours.  Couldn't "hold it" until 8:30 this morning when the OBs office opens to call and couldn't find a reasonable container in my house to use, so I ended up not collecting some urine.  I talked to the lab technician this morning -- she had me come in to get another container and said to just continue collecting for the rest of the 24 hour period (finish when I was originally going to finish) and didn't seem concerned that the collection wouldn't contain 100% of my urine during the 24 hour period.  Kind of makes me side-eye how accurate these test results will be.

Oh well, I'm just hoping I have this overdue baby SOOOOOON!  Thanks for all the input, ladies.
