If your baby is colicky

Tell me what is there day like & what have you found helps soothe them and how do you cope?

Re: If your baby is colicky

  • D is mostly colicky around 6:00-7:00 p.m and it sometimes drags into dawn.

There is a laundry list of things to try, and because each baby and each case is unique, you have to rely on trial and error to find out what works for your child.

    1. Colic massage:

2 minute vdeo on how to properly perform a colic massage

    2. "The 5 s's (Happiest Baby on the Block)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddRkI5wVIqQ

8 minute instructional video on how to properly use the "5 s's." I initially thought that it wouldn't work because DD had colic, but it did and its amazing.

     Coping?

Psh, let me know when you figure that one out, lol. I'm still trying to figure that puzza out for myself.

  • Usually her colic kicks in around 6-7pm and lasts until around 9. She's just dozing off right now so we've been going for about 6 hours tonight. I think we are also dealing with a growth spurt.

We do many many things...they are usually short lived. Like pp listed, 5s's, colic massage, walking the house with her turned outward so my arm presses against the belly, we go outside too, back and forth in her stroller, gas drops with every bottle, feeding her, rocking in the glider, and then usually we end it all with a bath, lotion and bottle. She usually knocks out with the white noise paying. Bath really helps her a lot. I also heard (haven't tried) that actually getting in a bath with LO while he's upset should help.

Coping? Take turns with H. I will take a shower, do dishes, something just to leave the scene. It's hard to hear her crying when I'm out of the room. Sometimes, like tonight I just took a shower and cried in there.

I'm so sorry that you are all dealing with this, my neice had it and it was awful.  I noticed you were formula feeding.  Have you tried Similac Alimentum or Enfamil Nutramagen?  These are for babies with milk intolerance.  My friend thought her baby had colic bc she screamed for hours on end and come to find out it was a milk intolerance.  Her doctor told her to try one of those formulas and just see if there was a difference.  She thought it wouldn't hurt to try and within a week her baby was completely different!  My son is on alimentum as well!  It is pricey, but if you buy a small ready to feed bottle of the formula it isn't so bad just to try it and see if it helps.

  • This baby is fine (so far - knock on wood) but my DS was colicky for about 8 months.

The 5's worked for us along with gas drops and I would microwave a soft blanket and then rub it on his tummy.

Good luck.  Colic is awful.  Hang in there!

p.s. if you are a formula feeder, the Ready to Feed instead of the powder works best in my experience.  A LOT less bubbles.  If you have to use the powder then stir it up rather than shaking it.  GL!

  • LO has been colicky for almost 3 weeks now and it's been total torture. He starts getting fussy around 1, by 3 he's starting to get more agitated and the crying begins and usually by 5 we are in complete meltdown. I definitely think Happiest Baby on the Block is worth a read. I don't agree with everything, but it does have some really good ways of dealing with and trying to handle colic.

As far as coping with colic, well, this is really the first week I've reached out to our families or help. DH tries to help when he's home from work but it's only a few hours we get together so it's been very challenging. I'm oing back to work in a few weeks so I'm definitely getting stressed knowing I will most likely have to leave my baby while he's still in this tumultuous state. Anyways, I've scheduled family to one over everyday for the next week so we can get some rest and get our home in order. This has been the biggest help...most people want to help, but don't know how so if you have it available the best thing you can do is to utilize it. I had to majorly swallow my pride but my peace of mind is t ease. GL,

  • For DS1, the 3 things that helped the most:

    1) eliminating dairy.  Colic is usually something else like reflux, dairy intolerance, GI issue that is upsetting baby.  Regular fussiness that ends around week 6 isn't colic and isn't as intense as colic.  That will work itself out.  So, if you suspect something is bothering your DC, eliminate it, see a specialist (Peds are great, but they aren't specialists in all areas), get medication if necessary.

    2) sticking to the 2 hour sleep rule (I think this is from Weissbluth).  Baby should be down for a nap w/in 2 hours of the last waking, even less after the first wake of the day.

    3) not letting baby over-stimulated.  I had to wisk DS1 away to a quiet, dark room at the first sign of being over-stimulated by sights or sounds around him.  If I didn't, it could be hours before he finally calmed down.

Thank you :) we have her on nutramigen now, it's been about 2 weeks. There is a slight improvement but she's still very gassy and cries a lot. I am actually taking her back to the pedi tomorrow. I feel maybe she has silent reflux. I just need to talk more about it. It's killing me to see her like this.

You're very welcome.  We started with nutramagen and my son was extremely gassy to the point that he'd cry every time he passed gas which wasn't normal for him.  As soon as we started the alimentum ready to feed it got a lot better.  It is pretty expensive but I bought twenty $4 off similac formula coupons on ebay for only $4.  After the coupon a bottle of ready to feed is only $4 and it lasts up to 48hrs.
