No A/C, fan?

We don't have A/C and in the afternoons it gets pretty hot. I picked up LO after her long nap this afternoon and her back was all sweaty, poor thing! I've been hesitant to use fans with her for some reason...maybe it's some wives-tale type of thing, but I somehow got it in my head that a fan on the baby is not good for respiratory system. Anyone here use fans to cool baby's room? Please explain your setup and usage.

Re: No A/C, fan?

  • We use a fan.  Right now it sits in the doorway to kind of cool the whole upstairs.  But we did have it on his dresser for a while to let the cool air in the windows.  I don't let it blow directly on him.  It hits him a little, but I wouldn't point it at him.  The noise also helps him calm down and fall asleep.  We also have used the ceiling fan, but that makes me nervous because it wobbles back and forth.

Hopefully it's not a bad thing.  We've been using fans for a while now.

  • We have a ceiling fan in LO's room. It's on every time she is in there sleeping to keep the air moving. It helps prevent SIDS.

  • We have AC but DS's room is over the garage so it still gets really warm in there. We have a ceiling fan that we turn on every night to help cool it down. I don't think there is anything wrong with having a fan. I think its better to have air circulating in their room anyway.

  • We have several fans at night (DD is still in our room).  DH has one pointed right on him.  We have a ceiling fan over the bed.  And a third kind of at the end of the bed.  DD gets air from them but none are directly blowing on her.  At our baby care class, we were told that fans provide air circulation and help prevent SIDS.

We have a window fan and a floor fan in the nursery. It's been really hot here so we started using the AC's but don't have one for their room so we have fans set up to blow the cool air in there (the one benefit of a small, one level condo - two AC's cool the whole place!). We've been using fans for quite some time with no issues.

  • Don't fear the fan!  Research actually shows they help prevent SIDS.  LO is still sleeping in our room and I switch ours on whenever she is sleeping or napping.

  • We've always had a ceiling fan going for Eli. Even in the winter, we just reverse the way it blows so it pulled the air up instead of down to circulate the heat. I don't see anything wrong with having one going - but I wouldn't put it on high and blow it right at LO either.

We've always used fans when it's hot. IT actually can help prevent SIDS b/c it keeps the air circulating.

  • We use a fan in our kids rooms.  It is supose to help not have SIDs happen, so we have always had one running for them.

  • We use a fan in DD's room - one of those ones you put in the window. My dad said we should always have had a fan on in whatever room she was sleeping in (not directly on her - just circulating the air) because it's good for preventing sids...No idea where he found that out but it sounds like a legit argument...It was tough to do in Feb though - so we didn't do it till about April.
