Pre-School and Daycare

Head start getting in?

We do not meet the income guidelines for headstart in our area, but there are no private preschools just a few daycares that have preschool age kids.

How can I improve my application for headstart they only have 9 spots for over income kids in our area?  the only other option for a preschool is to drive LO 45 min each way to a preschool and that is not something I look forward to.

Like the pp mentioned, a lot of churches have preschool programs.  Have you tried to "Google" preschool in (insert your city and state here).

They like diversity and brains so if head start is mostly hispanic/black/asian ect in your area than being white will actually help you, if it's all white and you're H/B/A than that will help you too.  Since a lot of kids in head start are disadvantaged with no prior school exposure if you've got a highly intelligent child who already knows their colors/shapes/ letters ect they might be considered a strong peer model ect.  Those are the basic ways they fill those "extra" slots.

Non of the churches have a preschool it's a smaller town and over half of the kids will be in headstart (around 70% of kids in town will go to the program).  I would love to have another school in town but right now there is not one.  DS is very smart but he hasn't had a lot of social interaction with kids his age we just don't know any most of our friends have kids a few years older (great for the education type stuff not so much for socail)

  • Head Start maybe one program that goes by income level. They also look at taking Special Needs children. I know this because they would have taken DS for speech even though we made too much to qualify.

We went with the school district preschool which was a Special Needs preschool because we thought we would not get into Head Start. It also was much closer to where we live.

I would try the school district and see if they have a preschool your LO can go to and take it from there. As PP's have said some daycares are preschool based.
