Babies: 0 - 3 Months

red, dry, flaky skin on face and head.

Hi all, I'm a FTM and really don't know what to do about this one and was hoping someone out there could help me out. My son is about 5 weeks now and recently had bad acne all over his face. I have been washing it with just warm water and though the acne has started to clear up it has left big red blotches on his face which resembles a rash and more than that his whole face and head has started to flake, which has me a little concerned. I don't know if I should put lotion on it or if that might irritate his skin? Others have told me vaseline or baby oil after his bath might help. Has anyone else experienced anything like this and what worked for you? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

  • My LO has horrible skin. My pedi recommended cortisone cream topped with Vaseline creamy. We do this every night with great results.

  • My DD had baby acne really really bad. I took her to the dr and they told me to put cortisone cream on it. I also changed her bath soap to aveno baby. It had cleared about a week later. She had it everywhere and it seemed when I put vaseline or baby oil on her skin it would get worse. I hope this helps.

The big red blotches that have started to flake, paired with the acne, sounds like cradle cap. My baby has this and has had this on and off for about 5 weeks. It started to show up around week 4. I rub baby oil on her head, forehead and eyebrows. Then I use baby shampoo to wash it off. I put a LITTLE cortisone cream on the worst area. Don't rub it all over your babies head and face. It is a steroid and is not good to use daily. Also, consult your pediatrician before you use it.

  • Around 3 weeks, my LO started with pimples that turned worse in the following two weeks.  I only washed her with water, but at 6 weeks it got really bad and started to look like eczema, so I put some California Baby calendula lotion and it got better.  I still asked the doctor at her 6 weeks appointment and she thought it was a combination of eczema and cradle cap so she recommended hydrocortizone at the lowest dosage (0.5%).  Worked like a charm.

This. My baby had cradle cap and the cortisone cream helped it clear up in less than a week. It left him looking a little oily after application but it was really NBD.

  • My little one has a few spots like that on his head.  Pedi said mild excema and to treat with aquaphor.  I think its cradle cap but the aquaphor works great.  You might want to try that before cortisone as that's a steroid.
