C-sections

Going into labor before scheduled C Section?

Can I hear some experiences with this? Any complications? My C section is scheduled at 39 weeks and I was looking forward to the scheduled C section instead of the emergency one I had last time. I have heard that it is better to do C Section before you go into active labor.

My water broke with DS1 at 36 weeks.  I was in "labor" for about 4 hours before they did an emergency c-section.  DS2 was a planned RCS at 39 weeks 1 day.  There really wasn't much difference in my c-sections other than one was an emergency, and therefore a little more hectic than the 2nd one.  The schedule you early for the c-section to hopefully avoid you going into labor.  They do prefer to do the c-section before you start to labor.  I would think, if you went into labor before your c-section date, that they would bring you in and do the c-section pretty quickly.  I don't think they would want you to labor for long unless you are trying for a VBAC.

  • my c-section was scheduled for 39w but my water broke at 37w2d. i was in labor for about 6 hours before my c-section, but other than the never ending flood, i didn't really experience anything else labor-related. according to the machine i was having contractions, but i didn't feel them.

  • My water broke 2 days before my scheduled c-section.  By the time I got to the hospital I was dialated a 7 so they took me directly in and prepped me and my LO was born within an hour of arriving.  I was having serious contractions with my labor but this c-section was nothing like my 1st c-section where I had labored for so long then had an emergency sectiona after 36 hours of labor.  So I would not worry about going into labor before, I thought it was almost better because I didn't sit around and stress about the surgery since my water broke before hand.  GL!

I asked my doctor that today and he said " if you go into labor ahead of time and show up at 7-8 cm and baby is almost ready to come out, then we will let baby come out naturally". I thought this was odd because he was the one who kept on telling me I was not a good candidate for a VBAC since I had a myomectomy and a c-section before.
  • My water broke 2 days before my scheduled repeat c-section.  It was actually pretty low stress... I called the Dr.'s office and told them my water broke and they had me shower with the soap they gave me at the pre-admission testing and then report to the hospital.  It was very calm and organized and low stress since I didn't have to labor for hours like I did the first time.  LO was born about 2 hrs. after getting to the hospital.

  • I went into labor a week before my scheduled repeat c/s.  I was more in shock then anything else, but also a little panicked b/c of my history.  I didn't really know what was going on other than I was bleeding and thought I needed to get to the hospital.  I got there, got put on a monitor and checked.  I was indeed in labor and baby was doing fine so I just relaxed and waited.  We got to the hospital around 5:15 am, admitted around 6 am, went into full blown labor around 6:30 am, thought I was going to die from the contractions (LOL) that were coming every 2 minutes for 1/2 hour while they waited for an assistant surgeon to come in.  Got me up and I walked over to the OR, got prepped and Grace was born at 7:45 am.  In my opinion, it was much better than the anticipation of the night before the c/s and the waiting and anything else that goes along w/ it.

  • I went into labor 2 weeks before my scheduled c/s.  I didn't have any issues or complications.  I did head to the hospital as soon as I suspected I was in labor to get checked out though, just in case.  I had a pretty quick labor/delivery the first time and since I had a breech baby I didn't really want to wait too long.

I agree with pp-in my case I'm glad I went into labor early, because I was already sitting around obsessing about the surgery, and I still had 2 weeks to go.

My water broke five days before my scheduled RCS, around 8 PM on Thanksgiving.  I showered and finished packing my bag, we got to the hospital around 9, and DS was born at 12:06 AM.  It took a few hours for the nurses to confirm my water had broken (to me it was obvious but they wanted to be certain) and to assemble the surgical team, since it was a holiday and I had DS at a smallish hospital.  By the time I got the spinal my contractions were becoming painful, but they were nowhere near as bad as they were with DD.  On the whole it was a much more relaxing experience than my labor and emergency c/s with DD, and everything went very well.
