New OB/GYN :(

I am pretty sure I am going to have to start looking for a new OBGYN.  I am devestated and there have been a few recommendations made for 1-2 other doctors (one who helped deliver Lilly) from people I know went to him also- but I am thinking I want to start looking around now.  We aren't 100% sure but we may start TTC end of summer/fall ish and I don't want the stress of getting preganant and trying to find a new doc.  Any recs for docs who deliver/practice out of GBMC?

Re: New OB/GYN :(

  • I see Dr Supplee, his office is on the GBMC campus (he also has one in Owings Mills and Eldersburg).  I absolutely love him.

  • I don't have any recs but I wanted to say I was sorry. Your OB was the one who suffered the heart attack, correct? Did he pass away? :(

I know how important of a doctor he is/was to your husband's family and you guys.

  • I was transfered to Dr. Lin, who delivered Victor.   I was really nervous at first because the first time I would be meeting her was for my cerclage removal.  The office staff was really nice. When I called to schedule my appointment, they put me right on the phone with her and she was really reassuring.  She was also great during delivery.  I really like her.

She and Dr. Hajj work together a lot, so if/when he gets back to practicing it would be easy to transition back to him.  If you call the office they will transfer your chart to Dr. Lin.

I haven't heard anything about Dr. Hajj in about a month.  I hope that he is okay.  At that time they said he was recovering but VERY slowly.  I don't think the family wants to share a lot of details.

    Good Luck whatever you decide.

  • FYI - GBMC has the highest c-section rate in the state of MD....

I would consider St. Joe's as well.

My baby has a heart condition so I'm delivering at Johns Hopkins which has a brand new L&D department.  It's NICE! I toured it today.  So you may want to consider it.

Another to consider is Mercy.  They will open a brand spanking new L&D this June.

  • I see the OB/GYN Specialist of Maryland.  They are a group practice with offices in Owings Mills and Towson and deliver at GBMC.  Their website is: https://www.obgynspecialists.net/

I know others say that GBMC has a high rate of c-section and I admit I am part of those numbers but I wouldn't let that sway your decision.  I decided to deliver at GBMC because they had a level 3 NICU just in case we needed it.  Yes, I wound up having a c-section but that was at no fault to the great doctors and nurses.  My body wouldn't cooperate and was only feasible to go the c-section route after pushing unsuccessfully for 3 hours with DD.

I HIGHLY recommend the Hoffman Group our of Mercy.  I delivered DD1 with them in 2010, and am excited to be in the new hospital with #2in October. They are an all female group with offices at Mercy, Dundalk, and Catonsville.

I wouldn't go to GBMC because of the c/s rate.

Before I was transferred to Johns Hopkins, I was being seen by the Hoffman group.  They are really great ladies and I would have continued my care with them if I had the choice, but I wanted to add that with them you only get 5-10 minutes tops with the doctor.  I've always felt rushed at every appointment.

This practice delivers at Mercy, and they do have a brand new NICU as well that is (I want to say) level 2.  I couldn't deliver there because my baby will need open heart surgery possibly at birth, so they weren't equipped, but for most births they are more than equipped and they have a brand new facility that is state of the art. I would look into them if I were you. :)  Skip gbmc.

  • I delivered at gbmc and have several friends who did as well.  None of us had c sections.  I was induced and labored for quite awhile, no one mentioned one word about a c/s.  Just wanted to share a real life experience with you.

I went to Charles Street OB/GYN.  Their offices are at gbmc and deliver there as well.  There are three doctors in the practice.  I saw them all throughout my pregnancy and loved them all.

  • I also see Dr. Lin at GBMC.  Have always been happy with her.  She isn't pushing me into any c/s (we'll see when the time comes, but she is supportive of me wanting to deliver vaginally), although it may be necessary because of my LO's size.  If so, I certainly want experienced people performing it!

OP, this is just an opinion. I delivered my last two there and there was no mention of a c-section. I say stay with GBMC, it's awesome there. Stick out tongue

  • I have had a Nurse friend that worked at GBMC and they are not as open with some methods that are condusive to natrural child birth. They do have a high rate of schduled C-sections, that can be for several reasons. They have a high risk ward, the have a higher level NICU than other hosptials in the area. St. Joe's will not do tubal ligation, so if someone is trying to get thier tubes tied at the the same time they give birth, they have to go to GBMC (if they want to stay in Towson) Don't let that sway you, it is your doctor that you need to be comfortable with. Your doctor is who makes the recomendations to you.

I have always given birth at St. Joes and loved it, but I have heard wonderful things about GBMC.

If you're willing to consider St. Joe's instead, I highly recommend Capital Women's Care. They have offices in St. Joe's and Bel Air, and Dr. Zern in particular is wonderful.

Thanks-Yes I've heard good things about Saint Joe's too!

he didn't but I don't think he's going to make the full recovery he needs to be able to practice.

  • Thanks!  Well chances are i may need a C-section so why not go to the place that has 'experience'.  I had one with my first and was very comfortable there but I definite wasn't pushed into one either.  I made that decision with my family and doctor recomedations.

I may try Dr. Lin-she did help with DD c-section-but I also wanted  a few other suggestions too-this helps T/U!

  • I see Dr. Ginny Merryman at GBMC and really like her. She is in practice with Dr. Allen (also female) and I've had a great experience with them so far this pregnancy. (I've had appointments with both.) I had a scheduled c/s with my dd because she was breech and am probably going that route again this time. I received 3 excellent recommendations for them from good friends and my best friend's mom is head nurse in Labor/Delivery at GBMC.

I had my dd in North Carolina so I was dreading finding an OB/hospital that could compare to my wonderful experience in Charlotte but I've been very pleased so far. I will say it sucks to pay for parking at every appt and the wait can be a bit lengthy sometimes in the waiting room (they are a very busy office). I've never had to wait for a call back with results or with any questions I've had. The office staff is great! Good luck!

I also see Dr. Merryman, and like her very much.   She's not everyone's cup of tea (I know someone who sees Dr. Allen in that practice, but had to see Dr. M once and thought she was a little "rough around the edges").  I like that about her though, actually.  She is a stright shooter, and I like her dry sense of humor.

As a FTM,  I was a nervous wreck about delivering DD, but Dr. M was awesome and really encouraged me along the way.   I was induced, but was able to deliver vaginally.  The staff at GBMC was wonderful too, and I have nothing but good things to say about our experience there.

As for parking, I agree that it isn't ideal to have to pay each time.  I discovered at the end of my pregnancy, however, that you can buy discounted parking tickets in book form to help save on the cost.   We did that for the last few appointments, and gave them out to friends and family who visited after we had DD.

I agree, she knows her stuff and is no nonsense. I like that in an OB. She's very personable with me, as I'm sure she is with everyone. I used to see Dr. Lenowitz in Bel Air but his personality wasn't for me. Dry humor (which I'm okay with) but not personable at all. Also, he delivered at Franklin Square and I wanted either GBMC or St. Joes. I've been really happy so far and thanks for the heads up about parking. Once I get to the every week appt stage, I'll buy a parking package! Smile

  • I delivered four kids using Perinatal Associates at GBMC. I saw Hunter but actually have seen all the doctors at some point because I was there so often because my last two were twins. They are all great. GBMC is a fantastic hospital and a great place to have a baby. The bashing needs to stop.
  • Hi!  I recently discovered  (upon finding out that I was pregnant) that my GYN does not do OB.  I started going here:  https://www.obgynspecialists.net/, and have LOVED it so far.  They deliver at GBMC, and you see each of the docs throughout your pregnancy so that you are comfortable with them all.  One of them is ALWAYS on call, so you will ALWAYS be assured to be delivered by a doctor you know, and who knows you and your pregnancy.  This way, you don't have some random person delivering you if your doc is out of town, etc.

Added bonus, they have a Certified Nurse Midwife on staff who is very committed to helping you with a natural childbirth if you desire.

This is my first, so I've never delivered with them before, but so far, they've made me feel really comfortable and secure!

  • I know GBMC and St. Joes are right next to each other.  But I gotta give a shout out to Sinai.  They did an excellent job when I delivered there.  I've sent several others over to Sinai OBGYN Associates.  Every single one of their doctors is excellent, each one has a different personality, but I felt like they were all on the same page.  The office nursing staff is lovely as are the hospital nursing staff.  We'll happily go back to them with #2, when it happens.
