Fussing in sleep?

DS is 9 weeks tomorrow and is sleeping thru the night for the most part.  He will get up once in a while to eat, but most nights he sleeps from 9 pm until 6 or 7 am.

However, even the nights he sleeps all the way thru, he starts fussing in his sleep usually around 4 am?.He sleeps in his own room in his crib and I know my monitor won't let me hear every little noise, so usually when we do hear his fussing, we go in and rub his belly or pat his tush and he settles down and sleeps peacefully the rest of the night / morning.

I guess my question is does anyone have this happen to them?  Should I stop going in there and see what happens?  I have no clue why he is doing this, I don't recall DS#1 ever making a peep unless he was up and wanted to eat so I am not really sure what to do other than keep calming him down and hope he can learn to sleep more peacfully soon?  Any thoughts?

  • My little one is 3 weeks and grunts a lot in her sleep especially at night. She is defeinetly dealing with gas and working something out, but it doesn't seem to bother her... she doesn't get fussy. I am breast feeding and we think it is do to a fast let down which causes more gas.... I've read that you need to make sure they burp during feedings early on.

    Good luck!

DD does this too.  She sleeps from 8-6:30 most nights, but usually has fussy periods around 11 and 5.  I think she's just in a section of her sleep cycle where she isn't as deeply asleep.  She's definitely asleep though, because if we try to change her diaper during that time, she usually doesn't open her eyes until we're re-swaddling her.

  • Mine does this after her mid-night feeding.  From what I've read, it's just a shift in sleep cycles.  The important thing, supposedly, is not to wake LO when this happens or s/he can get too used to it and have trouble staying asleep through sleep cycles in the future.  If you just leave LO alone through it, s/he will settle back down and eventually outgrow having such noisy sleeps.
