I go to the dr on Thursday, and I'm pretty sure she will want to discuss an induction. I'm taking EPO, she has said no Cervadil or Cytotec, but is open to using a gentle induction with Pitocin. I plan to ask about all the logistics with starting Pit, if/when she would want to do an AROM, and how long she'll let me labor. I would LOVE to go without any induction, but I want to feel prepared for my appointment this week. If you had a gentle induction for a VBAC, whether successful or not, will you tell me about your experience? Can you think of anything else I should ask? Thanks!
Re: Any experience gentle VBAC induction with Pitocin?
I asked a similar question awhile back, because my MW basically said no to all forms of medicinal induction, including pitocin. At first I was a little upset because I saw pitocin as sort of a potential "last resort" option, however, I read an article that says the warning label that comes with the drug states it should not be used when there is a predisposition to uterine rupture.
(see # 20)

After reading that (as well as the reference links), I accepted that my MW gave me good information.
I had pit with my VBAC. The latest studies (though I have no links) suggest it does not increase your rupture risk any more than for non-VBACers if used properly. (It does increase the risk a bit- even if you haven't have a c/s).
That said, I was at the point where the hospital gave me the option of induction or RCS. The risk of death during the c/s was a greater concern to me than a rupture that could be handled by the hospital, so that is why I personally chose the induced VBAC.
I was monitored the entire time and they were obviously watching for any issues. There were none and I was able to successfully VBAC! I am sure they will require continuious monitoring for you. They did not break my water- it went on it's own. I am sure they would have if the hospital began suggesting a c/s. But that never came up for us. I had the option of laboring on a ball or in any position I wanted within the room. I'd suggest you just check to see what their policies are with you moving around/whether they are going to encourage an epi, etc.
Do you think she'll want to talk induction before your DD? I will go for the pit at 41 wks. But, like you, I'd really like to have this happen on it's own.
We had my first appt with this pg a couple weeks ago, and my doc said no induction as well. The hospital and the doc practice is totally open to the idea of a vbac, but my doc said that induction was the one option we could NOT do again. She didn't really explain why (and I didn't ask) because I wasn't thrilled with the idea of having another induction anyway. I'm hoping to vbac, but would be much more willing to do a repeat c-section than go through the induction process again, based on my experience with my son.
I'm not sure when she would want to schedule the induction--she hasn't given me anything firm about how long she'll let me go. I just think she'll want to talk about it this week, so I can ask questions and discuss when we would schedule it for.
Thank you everyone for the responses!
