Constipated Baby? : (

Hi all!

My son is a day shy of being 4 weeks old.  He's a great eater (a bare minimum of 4 oz. of breastmilk each feeding).  However, after he eats, he poops...  & it seems painful for him.  He struggles for nearly half an hour, pooping sporadically during that time, making it impossible to change his diaper without having to change it another 6 times.  While he struggles, he fusses, cries & wails while turning red & thrashing about.  I feel horrible because there is NO consoling him, although giving him his pacifier seems to calm him down a little...  He's only started this the past week...  Before then, pooping seemed effortless to him.  My diet hasn't changed in the least so I don't think it my milk...  Can someone please tell me if this is normal & if it isn't, what I can do to help him?

My LO always strains to go and I feel so terrible for him. It seems to be a rather common thing from speaking to my pedi. Are his stools soft? A mom on my bmb recommended biogaia, a probiotic, which can help your LO out possibly. I've read other moms say it works great, too. They sell it at Walgreens. Good luck!

  • I've read is they are truly constipated then the poop will be hard not soft like regular baby poop. If the poop is still regular when it comes out then they are not constipated. Just something to think about... Maybe he just really has to think about it. Because hey, everybody poops.
  • Yeah, his poop is still normal... It isn't hard by any means so I guess he isn't constipated, just really challenged by pooping.  That's a relief, though!
  • My friend has the same trouble w her little girl, her dr recommended feeding the baby brown sugar and water ... I obviously would ask your own ped if this is okay but it did the trick for her! Good luck

  • If your babies poop isn't hard, then they aren't constipated.  He may just be uncomfortable pooping.  Some babies hold it in too long and get a small belly ache so they cry when they poop.  My son SCREAMS when he is pooping but it's not hard so i'm assuming he just doesn't like pooping...this just started a month ago
