Emory for a girl?

We're having the toughest time trying to chose a name for DD#2. Currently Emory Claire is our top contender. Meanings of names are very important to me and when I looked up Emory, that spelling is typically used for a boy. I'm not sure I like the spelling Emery (which is more commonly for a girl). Any thoughts on the name Emory/Emery for a girl and spelling preference? TIA

Re: Emory for a girl?

  • Although its nms and I prefer more feminine names it's fine. I have friends that named their DD Emmery, I prefer Emery. I like the more feminine MN you have chosen.

  • The name is NMS for a boy or girl, but if you use it for a girl I prefer Emery.

  • Maybe it's a regional thing but I've never heard Emory on a boy. I've only heard Emery [with that spelling] on little girls. Yes

  • I have a great uncle Emory and a cousin with the MN Emory. I love the name, but prefer the spelling Emery for a girl. Oh, forgot to mention, I know a mom whose H is Emory who has 2 girls. The youngest is Emery bc they are done having children and wanted to pass on the name.

  • I also have a friend with a girl Emery. While it's NMS, I think it's a softer spelling with the 'e' for a girl.

  • the name reminds me of emery boards and I hate those things... so I don't like the name in general, but I think Emery looks better for a girl.... Emory definitely makes me think boy.

I attended Emory University, so can't really imagine it as a name for a child.  As long as you don't live in the South, though, you could probably get a way with it.  Emery does seem better than Emory for a girl.

  • If I saw Emory on a list I would think boy.  I'd go for Emery for a girl.

This is our DD's name, and we get a lot of compliments on it. I have a friend from HS that I only keep up with through Facebook who named her DD Emery. I live in Texas and know nothing about Emory University.

  • Emory is all boy, but Emery makes me think of an emery board for toenails and fingernails.

  • Boy names on girls are all the rage where I live (Chicago), so I'm totally on board with the concept. Have you considered Ellery instead of Emery, though? They are so similar, yet Ellery is much more feminine. Ellery Claire is really pretty!
