High fructose corn syrup in similac

I just read that similac sensitive has this as the main ingredient, I have been feeding LO this since he was about 4 weeks but now I am thinking about switching back to advance because of this.. I am concerned by I read posts that says it can cause big babies etc. Do you think I should switch him back to advance now that his digestive system more mature (he is 9 weeks) also if anyone has any info to share on this that would be great! Tia!

Re: High fructose corn syrup in similac

  • I never knew that and my DS was on Similac Sensitive from about 4 or 5 weeks until he was 12 months due to reflux and he has no weight issues (50th percentile at 15 months). Is there a reason why you have your LO on sensitive instead of the advance? If no reason or aversions to the advance you can always go back to that. If there's a reason I'd keep him on e sensitive until the reason is no longer an issue.

  • The reason it has it in there is due to constipation/gas issues.  When babies are constiapted or have gas, it is recommended to give corn syrup/sugar water to help, which is what high fructose corn syrup is.  When you do an analysis (there are some online, but I can't find my saved links right now) the sugar content is not much more than breasfeeding/regular formula, since this is essential to digestion for a baby.

This is what I have read as well. I also read that it may be harder to switch a LO from this formula to another due to the sweetness factor, but have no experience.

I just switched my LO to Gerber Gentle because it's the only one with out corn syrup in it. Check it out. IMO it has no business being in a babies formula atleast not the FIRST ingredient. So far I'm really liking the Gerber and she is taking it well so far. Only started yesterday.

  • DD was on it for 10 months and is still only 28 lbs at 2.5.  Doesn't make big babies
