Anyone trying to wean their LO from the paci?

I've noticed that the only way my LO will go down to sleep is if he has his paci.  I do not want this to continue forever and I'm trying to get him used to taking some naps without it.

Is anyone weaning their LO from the paci?  How is it going?  2x moms how did you do it for your last child?

Heck I am still trying to get E to use a paci. She needs something (besides my nipple) to help her drift off to sleep during the day. Why are you concerned about it this early?

We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. • I know he is capable to sleep without his paci because he will do it from time to time.  I would like to have him less dependent on it.  He seems to be really attached to it.  I don't to take it away cold turkey, but I want the paci to be gone by 6 months.

  • We are starting to back off with how often we give it to him.  Most of the time, he can fall asleep without it.  If he gets fussy, it does work wonders and pretty much puts him right out.  I am hoping to have him off the pacifier by around 6 months, too.  I see older babies/toddlers with them and trying to wean them when they are old enough to know they want it is a nightmare.  If we can get him out of the habit early enough, we might be able to skip that part.

Let me tell you when they start teething, you may still want them to have it! They have special ones too that help their gums feel better.  With dd1, I couldn't have gone through teething without it. We had some nights too where she was having night terrors and it was a godsend then too.  She kept it until about 20 months.  At that point, she could reason a little and we told her we were giving it to other babies that needed them.  She gave it up without a fight and we were free and clear.

There is also research that it helps reduce the risk of SIDS, so it is recommended to use for one year.

  • He's still so little. I'm not going to worry about it until at least 1 year. And I also think it may help with teething.
  • No way in heck I'm taking it away till after teething. Both my boys took one till just a little over a year. By 9 months they only had it while in the crib. We got rid of it without a problem.

  • Right now, DD gets it whenever she needs/wants it.  If she doesn't want it, her favorite thing to do is spit it across the room.  Girl has some distance to her too!  At 6 months, we'll probably start trying to only use it at nap and bed times.  Though if she gets really fussy for it, she'll get it.  My goal is to get rid of it completely sometime after 1 year.

  • Audra only really gets it when it's nap time or bed time. When she uses it for sleeping she only sucks until she's asleep and then she always ends up spitting it out. I'm not even thinking about weaning yet.
