Sleeping and 1 week old

I was wondering if anyone had any advice about how to get my 1 week old to sleep in his crib.  We have been putting him down in there almost every time he falls asleep during the day when he usually sleeps more soundly, but he wakes up within about 10 minutes.  When he is being held, in his swing, or laying on Daddy's chest he can sleep for hours at a stretch.  I know that these aren't the safest ways for him to sleep, but come 4 am, we are pretty desperate and usually resort to him sleeping on the couch with daddy.  When we put him in his crib he is always swaddled tightly, just fed, burped, clean diaper. so it just seems that he doesn't like to sleep alone.

Any suggestions?

  • Could have something to do with the incline (or lack thereof) in the crib versus the swing/ daddy... Most babies I've known don't love to sleep flat right away.

  • Let your LO sleep in the swing.  I don't think there is anything wrong with that, but if you don't like it, try getting a pack n play or rock n play - basically anything more confined than the crib.  Your LO may just enjoy sleeping in small spaces right now.

  • My 10 week old is just started to sleep on a slight incline. The first two weeks were spent with him sleeping on my chest and he would not be put down. We got the rock n play and put him in it swaddled. That has been working the best.

You could look into a rock n play... Our LO slept sound once we purchased it l.

  • Sounds like either the incline or not feeling secure enough.... Try swaddling and or inclining one end of the mattress.  My son sleeps in his rock & play...he loves it and the swing too.

  • I read this great book called "baby wise" with what it taught me in the book I was able to get my little one to sleep 6 hours during the night at 3 weeks old! she is now at 2 months and sleeping through the night, it was an awesome book for me not only for help with sleep but other things as well. Hope this helps and good luck, lack of sleep was the most frustrating change for me!

  • Most babies like the feeling the tight/small spaces and of being curled up. With DD2, we have her in a bassinet next to the bed at night and I just lay my hand on her belly and she sleeps great that way.  I figure eventually she'll grow out of the need to have my hand there (my DD1 did).  During the day, she's okay with being kind of on her side on the sofa.  I know you can get sleep positioners for babies so they can sleep on their sides - a lot of babies sleep better that way.
