Midwives at Magee

Hello! I have my first appt. with the midwives in June. Have any of you gone there? I was wondering how my first appt. would go and if they would do an ultrasound at it, or my second appt.

Thanks!!

i got a quick ultrasound to confirm pregnancy, but not everyone will.  You should totally ask.  It will just be a quick one on their old and dusty machine, but it is SO worth it!

Typically you won't get another one until your 20 week, anatomy scan.  I got one at 12 ish weeks, since I did the Nuchal Translucency Scan testing.

If you are a FTM, you should do the NuMom2B study... you'll get more scans and some cash and a free car seat, or more cash. AND a free 3d scan!  totally worth it!!!

I'm using them right now and they're awesome! Super supportive and great ladies to work with.  :) Highly recommended.  :)

They're pretty conservative with most things, particularly ultrasounds...just got one at 18 weeks from them, but I did sign up for the NuMom2B study and got two bonus ones, including one at my first visit (the 3D one at the end was so cool!)

My first appointment was at 8 weeks and nothing really happened at it. She did an internal exam (not a full on pap, but if you haven't had one recently, you'd probably get that) to feel for the size of my uterus. There was no ultrasound and no heartbeat doppler.

The first part of the appointment was a sit-down with the NP who walked me through a lot of the basic stuff about the practice, gave me some materials and everything like that.

I only had an ultrasound at 20 weeks for the anatomy scan. Once I went in for my 12 week appointment, we started listening to the baby's heartbeat at every appointment.

    Hope that helps!

How do you sign up with the NuMom program?  Is it something you do there, or what?

I have my first appt with the Midwives at Magee one week from today and am climbing the walls!  I'll be 9w1d, and I would so very much like an u/s.  I'm a worrier by nature, and pregnancy is really compounding it.

    I love the midwives!

I am at 37 weeks with my first and have been seeing the midwives since the beginning. They are all great caring women! My first visit was at 12 weeks and it began with a sit down assessment, medical history, etc. Next was the physical exam and for us we got to hear the baby's heartbeat (so awesome!) Every visit you will probably have a new midwife, that way you get one on one time with each through out your pregnancy. They also have "Meet the Midwives" once a month so you can meet them all, ask questions, and tour the labor and delivery floor. I have had a great experience there, the visits are short (but not too short), I have never waited longer than 10 minutes in the waiting room, and they have been extremely flexible with us with scheduling appts (I have to schedule a week in advance.) They are laid back and always answer any of questions and concerns appropriately. I feel like I have had a lot of say in my prenatal care too. I chose the midwives because I wanted a more personal experience than you would get with an OB, I wanted a "laid back approach" to pregnancy, and I am a nurse so I feel more comfortable around other nurses! You have all of the options that you would with an OB, and it is nice too that you deliver in a hospital in case of complications. Some little things: We get to hear the heartbeat every visit (which I love), Meredith is awesome (I pray she is on call when I go into labor), and internal exams are optional the last month.

I highly recommend the NuMum2Be study as well. I signed up for it after my first visit and it is definitely worth it. The study is not through the Midwives but through UPMC Magees hospital. They have a girl from the study come in and explain the study and what they are researching, procedures and paperwork, and best of all.. The perks! You get 2 $20 visa cards, free parking during visits (which is nice because it is very easy to schedule these visits on your regular midwife visit), 3 ultrasounds (including a 3D ultrasound in the third trimester), and a car seat at the end or a $50 gift card. I suggest the car seat.. It is Graco and very nice! The study is easy.. You have to give a blood sample, vaginal swabs, answer questioners, and get an internal ultrasound to measure your cervix. I thought the study was painless and not an inconvince considering the perks.. And trust me you will be dieing for the days to go faster to get to the day of the 3D ultrasound! :) So if for some reason the midwife does not mention the study.. Just ask. There are also other studies offered, but I did not participate in them.

Good luck ladies, I hope you are as satisfied with the midwives as much as I have been. We have since moved up to Grove City and I still plan on delivering with them at Magee and most likely our future babies. That's how happy I am with their services!
