Curious...

Hi, I am curious to pick the brains of anyone who is/thinks that they are experiencing a baby with colic? I am a FTM and trying to figure out if my LO has really bad gas/reflux or possibly symptoms of colic?

Re: Curious...

  • My baby has reflux & colic.  What symptoms are you experiencing?

  • Well we struggle with putting my LO down at night, she is 3 weeks old as of today...I have been EBF which has been going fine, but she often will have a hard time burping. We can hear her tummy rumbling after most feedings and she passes a lot of gas but we can tell that this process if uncomfortable for her. At night, I nurse and try to put her down at 9 or so and she will fall asleep for 15 minutes and wake up fussing, I can tell she is gassy, but she has only spit up probably 4 times since being home from the hospital. So during her fussing time she cries and can be consoled by rocking, swadling, or nursing (although she will nurse for a bit and then comfort suck) and will stop fussing for a bit, but then starts fussing again and it takes a long time to actually put her down where she falls asleep and stays asleep. Once she falls asleep she is out for 5 or so hours. This has happend the last two nights and once last week.
  • DD often doesn't burp, but we were told EBF babies don't burp as much because they're not taking in air when they feed (unless you're bottle feeding).  Reflux is normally diagnosed by crying when they spit up, arching their backs & crying during feelings.  Spitting up is normal and doesn't have to occur to have reflux.  DD doesn't spit up much, but she did cry a bunch when she would spit up or burp.  Colic is really crying for "no reason", meaning they're not wet, hungry or in distress.  DD use to scream basically non-stop for the majority of her awake time.  I was told that infants with reflux often also have colic, but treating the reflux doesn't stop the colic.  We had to wait for her to outgrow it.  She still has days where she cries a lot, but it's moe like once a week or less.  I've always had difficulty putting her to sleep (she wakes up often when I lay her down), but I'm not sure that has anything to do with reflux or colic.  Colicky babies aren't really able to be comforted, they continue to cry regardless of what you do.  It honestly doesn't sound like reflux or colic to me, I'm wondering if she's going through a growth spurt, or perhaps she's overtired and needs an earlier bed time.

  • Thank you for your feedback...It would be great if it is a growth spurt as she lost weight in the hospital, which I know most babies do, but she has yet to gain what she lost back. I have seen our pedi twice and voiced conerns that I fear she is not gaining as fast as she should and wondered if she is actually taking enough milk. But, he is not yet concerned about her weight, we do go back Tuesday for another check. She latches great and all, I guess I have been anxious that she is not drinking enough since I really do not know how much milk she is getting. Thanks for your input!

  • I was able to get a breastpump as well and have been wondering about a good time to start pumping...Ideally I want LO to be able to take a bottle when I go back to work and also to possibly have my fiance give her one at night time. How are you finding the pumping to be going? How often to you pump?
