Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Reflux and a fountain of vomit - please help

Both of my 1-month-old twin boys have recently been diagnosed with reflux.  DS1 was diagnosed with the kind of reflux that's like "baby heartburn" but no spitting up.  DS2 has the spitting up kind of reflux, but not the baby heartburn.

Well here's the deal: for the past three days, DS1, who had the baby heartburn, has also started spitting up.  Large quantities. Just now he spit up about 2 oz - or half of his entire feeding.  He did the same thing the day before yesterday, and then the day before that.

When his brother spits up, it's nowhere near this quantity.  So naturally I'm worried that this is pretty abnormal.  Has anyone experienced this or something similar?

Re: Reflux and a fountain of vomit - please help

  • My LO projectile vomits quite regularly. About once a day. He is EBF. I can not measure how much he actually spits up because its EVERYWHERE. It scares me when it happens and sometimes its worse then other times. It has actually at times came shooting out of his mouth and both nostrils towards the ceiling. Very scary. Other then that he spits up after each nursing session and straight through until he is nursed again. (I have no idea why he spits up so much)  His doctor is not concerned with any of this because he is gaining weight. I am convinced he has reflux, but he hasn't been dignosed with reflux.

Is your LO growing? Does he act like he is in pain? or is he pretty happy? I would let your Pedi know  incase he wants to see him about it, but just wanted to let you know we are in a similar situation but Chase is fine :)

  • Ditto everything the previous poster said. It's hard to believe, but it's probably not as much volume as you think it is. Some days DD spits up so much I have to change outfits several times a day but she is still gaining weight well so the pedi is not concerned.

  • My DD and DS are both "happy spitters" according to my pedi. My DS spits up more than my DD and sometimes projectiles. I've asked my pedi and he said if they aren't in pain and gaining weight appropriately, it's just an annoyance and meds would only help if they were getting heartburn pain.

I'm not sure if you are FF but we switched my DS to Similac Spit-Up at the pedi's recommendation. It includes rice starch so it is a little bit thicker and harder for him to spit-up without actually giving him rice cereal.

I have to say I am tired of all the spit-up and changing outfits and hope they start to outgrow it soon.

    Good luck!

  • Just curious if any of you have concerned a food intolerance? DD was spitting up after every feeding and projectile vomitting (also, fussy and bad baby acne/eczema) but I went dairy free and rarely have spit up now and no more projectile or large quantity vomits at all. It's worth a try. I've also heard many dairy or soy intolerant babies get Misdiagnosed as reflux. It takes a good 2-4 weeks to get completely out of your system but I started noticing an improvement in a few days. She's also sleeping better since and I Feel better too. :)

Yep- they're both gaining weight quite well.  But then again, this problem just recently started.  DS1 especially never spit up any amount that was worth noticing or worrying about.  Now he's a puke-spout.

I'm sorry about your LO, but I'm glad the's still gaining and otherwise is a happy baby.  This makes me worry less.  So thank you!

I'm interested in trying this - even though we're breastfeeding and trying to stay away from formula.  I'll do anything at this point to make DS more comfortable. But have you noticed that it causes any constipation?  I've read some reviews saying it causes the babies to get a little backed up...

My pedi advised me to stay away from dairy and soy, although I've screwed up and accidentally had both in the past few days.  This is interesting, though, that it's worked for you.  I think it's certainly worth considering and worth trying.

I would definitely give it a shot if I were you anD if you'd like to continue BFing. I wasn't very careful at first and it didn't help much, I really had to be cautious at first- especially "hidden" dairy- read labels! Now I've noticed I can occasionally have something made with milk but only a little bit- like a granola bar every other day.it's really hard at first, for me giving up cheese and ice cream have been the hardest, but to see my baby happier and not sick (and the stress from that) is so worth it! Im still learning but the food allergy board here and some posts in the breastfeeding board have been helpful. Good luck!!

He never got constipated but I didn't let him go more than two days without a bowel movement. If it was the end of the second day and he hadn't pooped yet, I would take his temperature rectally and hold his legs up and that always did the trick. It was only about a week before he adjusted and was regular again.

    Good luck!
