STILL having afterpains! :(

At first I was actually excited about afterpains brought on by breastfeeding... it was like I could actually feel my uterus shrinking. I was thrilled with how fast my belly went back to looking nearly normal.

Except now I'm three weeks PP and still having them after most of our BFing sessions. Babycenter.com and other websites tell me they should have gone away in a few days, not weeks.

Did anyone else experience this? I'm starting to wonder if something is wrong, or if cramping is just going to be my body's normal response to BFing and this is going to keep happening until she weans. I don't love BFing to begin with, and this isn't helping matters any...

Re: STILL having afterpains! :(

  • Is this your first baby? The nurse at the hospital told me some women get them for as long as they BF. I had never heard that before and thought she meants for 2+ moms. The after pains as so rough. Mine were really strong this time, but stopped after a couple of days. Maybe talk to your doctor or midwife. Are you still having pp bleeding?

Obviously it has been a long time since I have been in your position, so if this is completely off base, disregard!  I had a lot of pains BF my DS, but come to find out it was because we had thrush.  I had never even heard of it before someone pointed it out.

Whatever it is, I hope you feel better soon.  Congrats on your little one!

FWIW, I had some issues with my uterus contracting tonight.. so I think it is normal.  They have certainly subsided, but on occasion they bother me.

I'm 2.5 weeks pp and still having them. The nurse told me I'd have them for a few months while the uterus is still contacting.

  • Occasionally I feel small twinges, hardly what I would call cramping. It's hardly even noticeable, I just assumed it was normal.
