cold milk?

i dont know if this is a big no-no (FTM here!) but with the weather getting warmer and warmer, would it make baby cooler if my pumped milk from the fridge is given to him? kinda like cold water cools us down? or does the milk absolutely HAVE to be warm?

Re: cold milk?

  • My DD has ALWAYS preferred her bottles to be cool to cold.  She is formula fed, 4 1/2mo old and is just fine!  The dr said some like the cold and it is perfectly fine to give it to them.  So I would think cold breast milk is ok too!

  • My LO is 3 months old and I breastfeed and give bottle pumped breast milk.  He gets it cool/cold (frig temp.) and/or warm.  He has been handling it just fine without problems.  Hope this helps.  Con-grates on your new LO!!

  • Yep, its fine.  In fact, if you get your baby used to the cold milk, you don't have to worry about warming bottles or regular milk once you are ready for that.  My friend had to warm the 2% milk for her 1 year old for several months.

thank you for this, i just want to make sure the cold milk doesnt have less nutrients or whatever.

  • It has been 95 here and I give ds cold bm bottles. He seems to love it when he is warm. Also noticed less reflux, but that our just be a coincidence! :)
  • Our LO takes her bottles straight out of the fridge too - So long as it doesn't upset their stomach it's alright.  Some babies are sensitive to the cold, others prefer it and then there are ones like mine that could care less so long as they get their bottle lol

  • I BF and have had a couple of times at my husbands baseball games where I have needed to give her expressed milk. I have no options to warm milk...she was super fussy the first time and I gave her the bottle straight off ice. She screamed with the first swallow and quickly sucked down the rest of the bottle.

Actually, if I'm remembering correctly here, heating up anything BM, formula even our food, kills some nutrients.

J will take his bottle warm, room temp or cold. We def prefer cold if it's warm out and he seems to enjoy it just as much. But having the option for room temp or cold makes it so much easier to take him places.

  • LO has reflux and the ped told us we should warm the bottle since cold milk is hard on baby's stomach.
