teachers..Come in please

Hello ladies,

?DD is 3.5 and loves letters, spelling, books etc. ?She knows all her letters and most sounds and wants to 'read' from her books. ?She recognizes some words ( like the, cat etc). ?I don't want to push her at all but was thinking of looking into some early literacy type activities. ?It's not like I want her to read tomorrow but was wondering if you had any suggestions as to next steps..

TIA:)?

Re: teachers..Come in please

  • I would just keep things informal.  Talk to her as much as possible about the letters, words, etc. but not in a "sit down and let me teach you this" kind of way.  She will pick up so much of it on her own just by being introduced to it.  Good luck!

  • I teach 2nd and my DD is 3.5 as well.  She took things a step further when she got into the Leap Frog videos.  Especially the one when they put blends together, like ST, and the storybook one where they do the play of 3 little pigs (she liked it so much, guess who got to dress up as the 3 pigs this Halloween?)

Other then that, see if she can retell books and storeies to you.  You can do sequencing activities where she tells you what happened first, middle and last.

  • I taught gnt second grade for eleven years so, never had to teach anyone to read but, if I were you I would read to her a ton (obviously you already are) and when you read put your finger under each word as you read it.  This will help her understand that your following from left to right.  I would also stop after you read each page and point to the picture and connect the text to the illustration.

You could also point to the word cat in the text and then, point to the picture of the cat in the illustration.

  • My son is a lot like that.  He loves to rhyme, find letters, sounds etc.  I also teach kindergarten.  I have no desire to push him to read prior to then BUT I know that he is really really interested in it.  I let him play games on the computer (noggin.com, starfall.com), the letter factory videos are great, Word World, most pbs shows.  I also read with him a lot.  Ask comprehension questions when reading-- what will happen next, tell me the beginning, middle and end, etc.  The best thing to do is make it fun!
