Breastfeed and formula feed?

Hi Ladies, I was planning on just breast feeding for the 1st 6 months, but is not possible for me, therefore I have to add formula, along with breast feeding. Does anyone else do both & is there any advice such as give the formula at night & breast during the day?

  • I have to supplement with formula as well.  I don't think there are any hard and fast rules.  I typically give breast milk during the day and formula at night just because I run out of breast milk by the evening.

I am about 75% BM, 25% formula.  I use the little 2 oz newborn bottles to top off LO during times he seems to be most hungry, like during his evening fussiness and cluster feeding. My supply also dwindles later in the day.  Good luck - just make sure you are using formula as a supplement and not to replace breast feedings or it will start to decrease your supply.

I do this as well. Pedi suggested I always start with bfing and then if she is still hungry, to offer formula. This usually happens late in the evening. At night I still bf since it is much easier than having to go and make a bottle. I try to give formula in the early evening so it will satisfy her a little longer, hopefully. But always do a bf before I go to bed and then with any wakeups.

I am doing the same altho switching to just formula when my milk dries up. I wasn't making enough milk to strictly bf... but i pumped and just gave breast milk first in a bottle then rest in formula... eventually mixed it all together when I knew how much LO needed.

  • I do both because DD wasn't gaining weight well just from breastfeeding.  I was breastfeeding and supplementing with formula for 6 out of 8 feedings but that was a lot of work and time especially since DD takes so long to eat when she's breastfeeding.   just started bottlefeeding during the day and breastfeeding at night since we cosleep and she eats much better from the breast at night.  It's been working out well so far.  I also pump so I've been combining breastmilk and formula in her bottles.  You just have to find a system that works out for you.
