Babies: 0 - 3 Months

2 Month Old Not Napping

My LO will be 2 months on Sunday and she hardly naps.  She sleeps great at night, usually 8pm-3am then 3:30am-8am.  But during the day she only takes a few short 30 min cat naps.  She isn't too fussy likes she's tired during the day but it's exhausting for me, not having the breaks.  Any ideas, is this normal?  Could she be overstimulated during the day?

Re: 2 Month Old Not Napping

  • My DD is the same way! And it started around 2 months for us too... I just wear her in an ergo and she falls asleep in there while i'm doing whatever i need to, and she stays in there until she wakes up - it's just not worth spending a bunch of time getting her to sleep and waiting for her to be in a deep sleep before transferring her to her bassinet... by that time she's waking up again! So ergo it is. The past 2 days she's started sleeping an hour or two for naps though so fingers crossed it was just a stage that has passed.

it was suggested to me that she may not be getting enough to eat, so she's waking up hungry.... I know that's not the case with us because she's gaining great and her diaper output is good... but I thought i'd mention it in case it could be true for you :)

  • Oh gosh, I hope this doesn't happen to me! LO will be 2 months old in about 2 weeks!! Right now for me, LO takes an hour sometimes 2 hour long naps. He probably still sleeping for 19 hours a day about. But I also carry him in a carrier when he's awake to get my chores done (:

GL to you and I hope it's just a stage!

  • Mine is doing this too.  I think it has something to do with her new-found interest in her hands.  She can't seem to keep them out of her mouth.  Whenever she lays down for a nap, she is up in 20 minutes eating her hands.  I agree - totally exhausting!

  • It's extremely common!! There are many many posts about it. My DS is like this and my first DS was the same way (lucky me!). It sucks, but now DS1 is a great napper, so  just hoping this guy grows out of it eventually too. I'm extremely jealous of people who have great nappers... they don't know how lucky you are!

This is mine, too! I never know if she's hungry or just trying to suck... she ends up frustrated, and wanting to eat no matter what. She doesn't nap unless she's on me... I need to baby wear more.

  • Same here. Mine is 9 weeks old now.  No longer napping during the day, but sleeps great at night.  Recently found his hands so keeps eating them! Refusing the paci (not sure if that's good or bad..) If he gets really fussy in the evenings due to no daytime napping, I first try nursing and then wear him in the baby carrier which makes him fall asleep.

  • It sounds like she's getting most of her sleep at night! My boy hasn't been taking very long naps but I think he's been doing a lot of napping while nursing, so I'm trying to keep him awake while he's eating. Is she comfortable where she naps? It just dawned on me that DS has outgrown his bassinet and he's sleeping much better in the play yard and crib now. Also I think his gassiness would wake him up, so I'm cutting back on dairy and trying to burp him more. GL!
