A little weird: half siblings coming out of woodwork

Yesterday and today I got emails from people who also used our donor, so I now know of 4 other kids.

I posted on a forum because of Finn's health issues and wanted to see if there's any other info out there. Turns out, one of the kids has regular febrile seizures and is on anti-convulsants. Boo. But Finn's been ok since 4/17 so we're crossing our fingers that it was a fluke (ok, two flukes, but still a fluke)

I'm open to emailing re. health issues, but one woman sent a pic, and I didn't know until I got to the end of the email and BAM- there's a baby that looks like my son!!

We're going to talk to our kids about where they came from and chose a ID-Release donor so they could try and find out at 18 about the donor, but its all happening randomly and a lot.

  • Yeah, that would be overwhelming.  We also chose ID consent so that as adults if they want to go that route they can, but at this stage (or anytime soon) we have absolutely 0 interest in meeting the 1/2 sibs. The only curiosity I may have is how many kiddos are out there.

Sorry LO is struggling with health issues.

  • I'm so sorry that you're dealing with all of this.  I think it's easy for those of us without babies yet or with new babies to believe that we won't look for these half-siblings, but when you're faced with a health issue it changes things.  It sounds like this is hitting you earlier and harder than you planned, which I'm sure is a big adjustment.  You're doing the right thing to gather information to help Finn, and that doesn't change anything about either of your relationships to your kids or these other half-siblings.  I hope it's a fluke, but if it's not, I hope these connections help you find some answers.

  • It is odd. I accidentally found a woman in our town who is pregnant with twins from our donor! What are the odds?

  • i can see how that's kind of awkward.

We got a non-ID release donor because we're just not comfortable with that road, but I'd never considered the need to contact bio-half-siblings for medical reasons...

this this this .. but  we happened to stumble upon an adult pic of our donor and i was so weirded out but  all in all its fine I saw him he could be my brother.  I thought i was only going to see him when i looked at my girls but nope..

alot of our friends are seeking and searching for 1/2 sibs and i just dont get it and they all hang out and pow wow together eek .. not for me but if it makes them happy so be it ..i do have to say when health issues arise then that may be a game changer for us and how we feel.

Ugg i am sorry you have to deal with this and for them to just send you pics... yikes... but with the seizures is there a possibility that LO will grow out of them?

  • My wife signed us up for the Donor Sibling Registry website after we had DS and we've, so far, heard of 4 other siblings and then our 1...and 1 in the tummy.  I'm actually glad we found it because one of the little boys has had a seizure and our son has alopecia.  I know how overwhelming and like, awkward and uncomfortable it can be at first.  But for health reasons, it's cool.  Alopecia doesn't run in my wife's family, and she carried him.  So it must be the donor.  If it's even genetic.  Either way, it ended up being a really great thing for us.  And I hope it ends up that way for you, too!  Oddly enough, we are going to meet with all of the moms and babies in July.  It should be interesting.
I also hope that the seizures are one of those silly little kid things that everyone grows out of!
