Natural Birth

Breeched baby

Hello!  I just came back from an ultrasound.  I am 36 weeks along and due to my age, was put in the highrisk category.  So the DR sent me of an AFI.

The person preforming the ultrasound said that she was butt down and head up.  sort of curled in a C.  Needless to say I was upset.  This is my first birth and I really wanted to do it naturally.

Have any moms out there gone through this?  I found a website about flipping a breech.

Re: Breeched baby

  • We just found out that our baby is frank breach, baby spent half the ultrasound sucking on it's toes!

Spinningbabies is a good resource.  You may also want to look into the webster technique and moxibustion.

For now I will be trying the spinning babies methods along with being more mindful of the positions that I'm sitting/resting in and staying as hydrated as possible because baby will have an easier time turning if there is more fluid in there.

    Good luck to you!

  • i have heard that it is the woman's body that turns the baby, not the baby deciding to turn itself. try getting a chiropractic adjustment! i work for a chiropractor & he swears that it helps!

  • I was having a lot of back and hip issues and my doula recommended me to a chiropractor a few weeks back. She's helped a lot! She opens at noon and I FOR SURE plan on calling her.

Right now I am doing inversions and the plank thing.  And not stressing out.

  • I gave birth to a frank-breech baby, but didn't know ahead to try anything - was head down at our ultrasound.  That being said, if I would have known, I would have tried all the spinning babies ideas, chiro appts., swimming headstands, etc to have the baby turn.  I have since talked with a doctor who teaches breech delivery across the country and honestly, he much prefers a 2nd time mom over a first time mom since he doesn't see as much success in breech delivery in first time moms in hospitals.  From my short appt with him, it sounds like first-time-moms are harder to work with mostly due to hospital policies on monitoring/movement during birth and the need to be moving/relaxing to help get in the right positions for breech delivery.

However, I wouldn't rule out talking with a doctor who does breech deliveries in your area (if you can find one - ask your midwife first and then ask around the hospital/OB offices) to see if you might be a candidate as a back-up.

Last - don't worry.  You still have time to have that baby move and I hope in a week, you no longer have to even think about a breech baby.

Two boys already - ages 5 and 3...

    ...baby #3 is here...

My son turned breech at 37w and I was scheduled for a c-section the next week. I tried all the at home things from spinningbabies but nothing was working. On day four I took the advice of a friend: I rubbed peppermint essential oil on the top of my belly. Apparently baby can smell it and doesn't like the smell and then will try and turn away from it (to a head down position). I put the oil on my belly at night before going to bed and in the morning he was head down again. This was confirmed by an u/s the day before my c-section, which was then cancelled.

I always mention it on here because it's worth a try in my mind. $6 for a little bottle of oil could help avoid a major surgery. Just a suggestion - good luck and keep doing all the other suggestions from that website!
