Port Wine Stain

Hello everyone :)

I just gave birth yesterday morning to a beautiful baby boy.  He was born with a port wine stain on his face.  Does anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Port Wine Stain

  • No personal experience other then I occasionally treat them in kids :)  They are quite responsive to some of the lasers we have and usually insurance will cover it.  At your first pedi appointment, ask to be referred to a dermatologist who specializes in vascular lesions or a pediatric plastic surgeon (it varies who treats these depending on referral patterns in the area).  Occasionally these are associated with other issues and your LO may require some additional imaging like a MRI of the brain, but usually not.  Even though they won't laser it for awhile, it's often nice to meet with the specialist early to set your mind at ease.  GL!

  • Thanks for the info.  I do want to have it taken care of now so that it's not an issue for him when he goes to school.  Poor little guy :(

  • I only have experience with Hemangiomas, my DD has one about the size of a quarter on her left temple. I know that I was upset for the first few months of her life that she wasn't "perfect" but I can tell you honestly I don't even see it anymore. I love her more than I could ever imagine. Your LO will eventually be able to have it treated. Don't be too upset, but if you are upset that's ok too. It's natural to want your baby to be perfect, and he is, in his own way :)

  • I also have a little boy, 4 1/2months that was born with a pws on his face. He has it on the left side. He will start laser therapy when he is 6 months old and go about every 4 months. They will use the pulsed-dye lasers. If it is near his eye at all then you should get his eye pressure tested because there is a risk of glaucoma and also depending on where the stain is located you may need an MRI. There are some great groups on Facebook - "I have or know someone with a port wine stain".
