Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When did you start pumping to stockpile?

I can't remember when I started last time and am having trouble finding the answer as to when you can start. Any ideas??  I have plenty of time before going back to work, but the more I can freeze/save, the better!

Re: When did you start pumping to stockpile?

  • I pump once a day, right after DD's first morning feeding. I get about 5 ounces. I started around one month. She went from sleeping 2-3 hours at a time to 4-6 hours so by morning I was engorged.

  • Due to latching issues, I started pumping on Day 3.  I really believe that starting sooner rather than later helped me to have a ridiculously awesome supply.  I produced more than double what she needed and had no problem building an incredible stockpile.  From what I read, you can pump on whatever side your baby doesn't eat on right after she feeds.  That will keep your production up, sending the signal that you need that much.  I guess I would start right away, so you don't have to worry about increasing production later.  :)

I started pumping and saving when baby was 2 weeks old. Will pump in the morning and freeze.
  • I've been pumping since day 1 and freeze about 15oz or more a day.  I've have over 450oz in the freezer right now.  I have an oversupply and a heavy letdown, so I mainly just pump and bottlefeed.  The morning pumping session is my biggest one, this morning I got 11oz.  I froze all of it today since I have plenty of bottles in the fridge.  I agree, the more you freeze the better.  I might be going back to work in the fall and hope my freezer stash is enough to carry her to a year, if not 8 or 9 months.  I might supplement with formula as well once I go back to work so my stash lasts a bit longer for her.

If you don't have an oversupply problem, I would start as soon as you can.  I had to wait this time bc it took awhile for my breasts to settle down.
  • Our little one was born early so we have been giving bottles of pumped milk after she attempts breastfeed.  I am pumping after each feeding and have been saving about 4oz a day.  I may start freezing more but I need to make sure I can keep up with what she needs each day.

    1. Good name :)

    2. I started right away. I'm glad I did because I can't pump as much as she eats while I'm at work. So it's almost gone.

I started doing one extra pumping session at 6 weeks. It just took me that long to find a new, "regular" schedule to where I could fit it in. I should still have plenty prior to childcare beginning at 4 months, but I should mention that I have never had a supply problem.

  • With DS when he began going to bed regularly I would pump 30-40 min after he went to bed and would get 2-3oz each night and that is how I built my stash. I believe I began doing this with him around 3mo. With DD I began pumping around 3wks. I was using that to begin giving bottles daily but since I started a bed time routine I began freezing whatever I pumped out after she goes to bed. It's been working out well except DH had to use some of it when I didn't leave enough in he fridge a few times. I don't go back to work until August so it's not a big deal.

  • I was having a hard time finding time to do it (I have a 2.5 year old too) during the day so I didn't start pumping until almost 6 weeks. By then DS was going down for the night at 7pm, so I would just pump at 10 or 11 before I went to bed.
