Cloth Diapering

Are there alternatives to spraying?

That's one of DH's biggest hesitations with using cloth on DD.  (And mine.)  For the life of me, I don't remember spraying DS's diapers.  Apparently I've blocked it out.  I CD'd DS until he was 1 without any incident, and then stopped just because his daycare wouldn't take cloth, and it didn't make sense to do either tiny loads of diaper laundry every couple of days, and letting them sit to do a full load did not do well for the stinkies.

Is there any way to avoid spraying post solids?

Re: Are there alternatives to spraying?

  • We have a slop sink in our laundry room and we use that.  I think some people use spatulas to scrape?
  • I haven't been in a hurry to get a sprayer (when do others start using them anyway?). I currently scrape with a plastic knife in our laundry sink. If I could hook a sprayer to the laundry sink maybe I would get one. The knife works for now though.

  • Diaper sprayers aren't compatible with toilets here in England so we sometimes use disposable liners to catch poop or the dunk and flush method. I had a bucket that I used the shower sprayer to spray into and then poured the contents of the bucket into the toilet but it was a bit of a hassle to do and I usually just dunk straight into the toilet now.
  • I use a spautual and scrape into toilet. If its really hard to get off I dunk. But Im usually ok with just the scrape
  • By the time you hit the scraping phase, LO isn't having a million poopy diapers a day, right?  Just a few?
  • No, they poop once a day at that time. We use a spray bottle.
  • I never had a sprayer with my older kids, and would just use toilet paper to get off poop if it wasn't ploppable.  Disposable liners can also help a lot, especially if you know when the deed is about to happen.

  • We also use a plastic knife and scrape. I find that after the diaper sits for a couple hours and the bm hardens it comes off much easier.

I wipe off whatever I can with a wipe and toss it in the toilet. Then I have a designated bucket I swish in, remove and dump the water in the toilet. Im a little Icked out by our toilet. Even when it's really clean.

    This is hilarious!

Uh YES they can poop more than once a day. My DD goes between 2-5 times a day (she's 18 months) and has since she started solids.

I would never ever CD without having a sprayer since, for me, it's the easiest way to get ALL the poop off, especially if it's stuck in the gathering.

You haven't met my kid. Some days it's once a day. Others it's four. And it's never, ever ploppable.

I would go insane without my sprayer. I scraped for a while, but the sprayer made life a lot better.

If you have a kid with ploppable poop, you can get away without using a sprayer.
