Babies: 0 - 3 Months

No BM in 9 days

I'm a new mom and my one month old has not had a bowel movement in 9 days. She is breast fed. I called her pediatrician and she said to give her 2-4 oz of juice for two days, and if still nothing, then give her a 1/4 teaspoon of milk of magnesia twice a day for 3 days. We are currently on day 2 of the milk of magnesia and still no poo. LO is very gassy though, and it is pretty potent when she lets one out. She grunts and squirms when trying to pass gas, and once she does, she seems ok. If after 3 days of milk of magnesia, and still nothing, I have to take her in to the doctors. Just wondering if other moms out there have experienced this with their LO. I hate seeing her uncomfortable and not being able to help her.

Re: No BM in 9 days

  • Around the 1 month mark my daughter didn't have a bm for about 5 days. I never called the doctor though because we read it was normal and sometimes just happens.

  • Our pedi told us it was normal for a breast fed baby to go as many as 10 days without a BM once they reach a month old. Breast fed babies have loose stools and therefore are not constipated.

  • My two week old seems to be having your baby's BM. She's a poop machine

  • This may sound weird, but when my daughter didn't poop for a few days when she was a few weeks old, I had read alot of people saying that they took the baby's temp rectally and it made things move.  It totally worked, and I mean immediately!

Dark Kyro syrup always worked for DS. Just put a little in the juice and see what happens.
  • The rectal temp or q tip with vasaline will usually get things going.
