Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Babies with residual cord issues?

When my DD's cord came off, she began oozing from her belly button the next day. We took her back to the pedi and apparently she had pieces left over in her button that never dried up. We've been back and forth to the pedi no less than 5 times since she's been home because she is still oozing. I have to put a crappy looking onesie on underneath all her clothes so she doesn't ooze on her nice outfits.

She cries so much when we go because the pedi has to put silver nitrate in her button. It burns her especially since each time we go he has to dig out new pieces and he scraped her skin once. So now the silver nitrate is being used on raw skin. I feel awful for her whenever we go but I know this is the only way it will heal.

Anyone else have this issue? How long did it take to fully heal?

Re: Babies with residual cord issues?

  • My son was diagnosed with an umbilical granuloma.  His umbilical cord fell off at day 9 and after that we noticed moist pink tissue that had not healed in the center of the umbilicus.  He has been to the pedi and also had to have silver nitrate applied X1.  His is still oozing and we also have had to put onesies under all of his outfits.  It looks like it has healed a little since we had the silver nitrate applied on Tuesday.  Hoping for a speedy healing process for both our little ones!  Sorry you are having to deal with this as well!

My son's cord was huge and thick and it took almost 4 weeks to fall off. When it finally did, it wasn't drying, still oozing and there was a decent sized piece of cord still in there. The granuloma took 2 applications of silver nitrate, 1 week apart, to get rid of. A few days after the second application, there was no more oozing and his belly button finally looks completely normal. The silver nitrate took another two weeks to finally come off of his skin and I can still see some staining deep inside but I'm leaving that alone.

I know what you mean about it being a tough application. My son's went so deep, it took 2 doctors using qtips like chopsticks to try to get to the root of it. It was very stressful for him because it took awhile since the granuloma kept dancing around and they couldn't get the nitrate on all of it.

  • I just took my baby to the dr yesterday because her belly button looked irritated.m she had residual pieces as well and they used the silver nitrate.  I just assumed it would heal but now I will make sure I watch it closely.  I hope we don't have to go back.  My baby has been to the dr 3 times now for various things.

I hope your LO's belly heals soon!

  • If it is hypertrophic granulation (sounds like it is from your description) then the silver nitrate is the way to go.  In the OR while under anesthesia, you can cauterize it with electrocautery too but that hurts way to much and I'd never do it unless someone was in there for another reason.
