Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Those with babies who have umbilical hernias

I have another question.

When the doctor looked at it she said it was fine, but I'm pretty sure it had some discoloration. Now when I look I can really notice the discoloration along the bottom, it's a little darker- kind of brownish/reddish. Just on the bottom part of it, where it doesn't poke out as much. Does your baby have any discoloration too and is that normal?? I seems like it might have gotten a little bigger, too.. Not sure if my eyes are playing tricks on me.

  • My daughter's sticks out like a soft marble and is purple-ish in near the center. It freaks me out a bit but both the pedi and pediatric surgeon were not worried about it...

  • My son had an umbilical hernia until he was about 6 months old.  It was bluish and about the size of a ping pong ball.  I assume that was the color of the guts beneath the skin.

Anyway, it closed up on its own - no silver dollars or surgery necessary.

  • My pedi told me yesterday at his two month checkup that the coloring is fine and there is nothing to worry about as long as you can press it into is body. If it gets hard then there is more to be concerned about.

  • the discoloration is totally normal. As long as it doesn't get incarcerated or strangulated (stuck out or stuck out with reduced blood supply) there is nothing to do.  Almost all go away by the second birthday.
