Just got a Babyhawk Mei Tai... (question included)

and I already love it!  I've been using a ring sling since DS outgrew the Boba wrap, and I like it, but kept seeing the mei tais and they looked very handy.  Tried one on with DS yesterday at the store and he loved being in it, though getting him in the back carry was a little scary for us both the first couple times.  

Also, I think the store-owner almost got sick of me being there because I took so long trying to pick out which design I wanted.  I ended up getting an awesome cherry red one with cherry blossoms on one side and Chinese dragons and tigers on the other.  It's pretty fly for a baby-carrier if I do say so.

I do have a question about the fit though.  In the store when I tried it on with DS, the ties were snug and DS was secure, but there seemed to be a bit more room for him to lean.  I'm not sure if this was because maybe the store model was worn-in more or if the lady helping me knew how to tie it better.  But when I have been wearing it at home, it seems like I've got him smushed really tight against me and he can barely move.  Am I tying the straps too tight or will the fabric loosen a bit on its own with use?   Or is this how it's supposed to be?  In the pics I've seen, it looks like baby should be able to wiggle a little bit.
