Other Hobbies?

Baby-making can't be the only thing we do, even though it feels like it sometimes! What are your other hobbies? DH and I dance, geocache, plus we camp and hike.

Re: Other Hobbies?

  • I like this chain....  I train for triathlons, which means we bike and run as a family as well.  I miss southern california and hiking, but oh well.  We are pretty much outside all weekend...running, biking, playing in the yard, swinging at the park, etc.

    Great topic!

DH loves to ballroom and swing dance.  He is trying to teach me (I am a klutz!).  It was nice to go to a wedding reception this past weekend and have a chance to cut a rug.

I also love knitting - it is very relaxing.

But my favorite hobby is just gearing up for the season.  I crew on sailboats and race on a 41 footer on Lake Michigan.  On Mondays, it is women only.  Oh so fun and a great workout for arms and legs!  Too bad we only can sail from mid-May to the end of September up here...

  • We hike and camp too. We've just taken up gardening for the summer, but we're such novices that every day we haven't killed anything is a good day.

  • DH is a huge movie buff.  We watch lots of movies and have a fantastic media room and family room set up.

I'm a big knitter so I usually work on something while we watch.  I have a bunch of other crafts but knitting takes majority of my time.

We also love to cook.  It's nothing terribly gourmet, but we love to try new recipes and come up with new ones.

We enjoy entertaining.  However, since we still haven't unpacked and finished the house, we're restricting our visitors to family.  Our goal is to finish unpacking (about 10 more boxes!) by July and have a housewarming party.  We won't have all our furniture or things on walls, but it'll be most things.

This is so me-- I always say that I have a black thumb, because my plants don't just die, they suffer. But I keep trying!

I used to play tons of rugby, but my body is not up for that anymore-- at least not at the level that makes it worthwhile and still exciting. So now that I'm done with nursing school and have a job, I want to get back to learning the violin, maybe take a language class (we have a huge Somali population up here) or two, maybe get back into some bike riding (I just bought a hybrid so I can bike to work), etc.

MH and I like to hike, camp (we have a very Maine-r dog who is a CHAMP at hiking the big trails), travel, and then I do a lot of cooking and baking (I like to tweak recipes to make 'em my own and experiment w/ ingredients and techniques). I also am trying to learn all about canning so that if I actually have some produce from my new garden, I can do something with it.

Thanks for starting this thread-- it's neat to hear what people do outside of TTC!

So, my last batch refused to rise.  It was an asiago cheese bread that just sat there.  I had bought some yeast in a jar and have been keeping it in the fridge.  What would cause it not to rise?

I have a Better Homes and Gardens canning book whose recipes are mostly for just plain pot-boiling and don't require a pressure cooker (which are only used for low-acid foods). And I wonder if you could use a pressure cooker on the grill? I've never heard about not using a pressure cooker on a flat-top stove. I have to check on that-- I don't use my pressure cooker so I gave it away...

  • The only canning that I have done was with my grandmother and she always used a pressure cooker so I tought that I needed one.  On a flat top stove it can crack the heating element because of the way it cycles the heat.  I am just freezing everything that we don't eat in a week.  I am so excited for the farmer to start.  The first week is the week that I start my next round of injects.

I ended up learning at a yarn store.  I know there are some great ones over there.  Plus, my local library teaches for free.

My grandmother who wanted to teach me passed away before I could learn (plus she lived in another country).  I wish we had Skype back then so I could have tried!

  • My aunt tried to teach me, but you should have seen the results! I tried to make a scarf, figuring that would be the easiest thing to make, but I was so worried about having the knit nice and tight (and even) that I ended up with all crazy, wavy edges.

It was not pretty... I wish I could knit, though-- my aunt makes awesome stuff!

You ladies are so interesting!  I have to be honest, I never really thought about girls having hobbies -- probably because my girlfriends and I just watch reality tv and drink.  I am completely boring -- when I'm not working, I sit around and think about the work I should be doing....while watching reality tv and drinking.

  • I'm so glad this thread took off! As mentioned before, everyone is so interesting!

I noticed there are a lot of campers here. Does anyone do any stargazing? I used to, but lost my telescope in the divorce (2004), and never got around to replacing it. I took an astronomy course in college - I went to college later in life, and it rekindled my interest, so replacing it is something that I would like to do soon.

    I also crochet, but I don't knit.

Omg I'm cracking up because that's what I do....reality tv and drink! I'm pretty pathetic. Well lets see. MH and I got bikes so I hope to bike alot this summer/fall. Weekends go so fast though with other stuff like cutting grass and cleaning!

DH and I took dance lessons but were were such rubbish by the end of the 20sessions we were just goofing around and laughing a lot.  The poor instructor had been on "so you think you can dance" but we wer hopeless.

I am trying my hand at gardening.  I started some plants from seed.  of the 48 I started, I hve about 12 left.  pretty sad.  I bought some mature plants and left them outside but huge hail storm came round and destoryted them last night!  lol

I used to play cello and piano when I was a kid  Mom sent my old piano from home last Chirstmas so I've been trying to play again.  It's great fun, I love it, but I'm not very good.

I knit, I learnt a few years ago froma book called "stitch and ***' it's the modern woman's guide.

Otherthan that, i mess around wiht computers, read a lot, play wiht the dog, try to exercise and enjoy it at the same time.  TRY being the operative word. And I love to cook.
