Cloth Diapering

Help: my thirsties are leaking!!!

And I don't know why :( I stripped the prefolds and covers a few weeks ago - even though the prefolds definitely didn't need it - the covers were leaking. As in, soaking through. And it was happening even when he hadn't been in the diaper very long. So I stripped them with vinegar (that was what we had at the time) and it seemed to work very well for all the covers except one. That one was still better, but I don't know what was going on with it. And now, all of the sudden, they are all leaking through again!

Here is my routine:

Prewash, Hot/cold cycle, 2nd rinse

1 tablespoon of Tide free & gentle (or whatever the dye + fragrance free stuff is called)

Dry everything together on reg heat for 90 minutes.

I'm wondering if I shot them by drying the covers that warm all the time....I never had this problem with the Bummis super brites, which seemed essentially the same as the thirsties (duo wrap). But maybe the waterproofing technique is slightly different. Any insight??

The thirsties site does say that occasional drying on high actually "re-seals" the stay dry sealant. Maybe too much of a good thing, lol....But I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this problem??

  • You definitely don't want to use high heat on PUL except for the occasional resealing, maybe once a month.

    Where are they leaking from?

  • They aren't really leaking as in, like out the gusset or something...just soaking, more like. If that makes sense? I will probably restrip and start hanging them for now (only two have had problems so far) and see how that goes. I was drying according to the Bummis directions (which came in packaging that said you could dry on "regular heat" - whatever that means - I figured my "normal" setting probably correlated) so I figured since the Thirsties looked the same, they could be dried on the same setting. Guess not!

High heat and normal heat are not the same.  Most people will recommend that you line dry everything with PUL/TPU with occasional drying on low if you need too. If you do want to dry your covers with your PFs, take them out after 15 minutes and let the PFs finish drying on their own.  As far as quality, bummis is better than thirties IMO.

Also, Tide F&C really isn't a great CD detergent.  You are likely to get build-up often (which may be your problem with the covers now), and have to strip a lot which is harsh on diapers.  You should consider switching to something else.  I like Tiny Bubble which if you buy the case from costco.com is cheaper per load than Tide.

  • You might have delaminated them in the high heat. I hang dry my covers or if I need them fast, I throw them in for about 20min on low.

And like the pp mentioned you don't want to use the free and clear tide. I use just plain old tide ultra. I've been using it since I started with DD2 with no problems, I've never had to strip or had any stink issues.

Sorry for the hijack, but THANK YOU for this.  I've been trying to figure out the cheapest way to get CD friendly detergent and we have a Costco membership.  I'd looked at our Costco store, but it's not in stock there.  It hadn't occurred to me to check the webpage.
