2 week old awake 6-7 hours in a row in the day?

Hi my two week and two day old, since yesterday, has been awake for 6-7 hours in a row in the day. From about 10-4:30pm. Is this normal or should they be napping more??

  • Sounds like quite a bit, for a straight shot, but all kids are different. Ds sttn by 1 week, so nothing shocks me!

  • My 2 week old gets very fussy after 1 to 1 1/2 hrs awake. Then it's bottle time and she goes right to sleep.

  • IMHO, that is extremely too much. At that age, they should be awake for about 45 minutes at a time. In fact, my 1.5 year old is only awake for about 5 hours before nap time (and then is awake just another 4 hours until bedtime).

    Here's a post I wrote a while ago, but it's applicable here: https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/47755634.aspx

That sounds like a lot of time. Is your baby fussy or crying at all? Your baby is probably overtired and you might not realize. Newborns generally have a hard time staying awake after 45min-1 hour (sometimes much less). But that doesn't always mean they will just drift off to sleep after a certain amount of time. They often need help going to sleep when they are very young. Try a swing, carrier, ride in the car or stroller, motion usually helps to induce sleep.

I have read that at this age they are supposed to be up max 1 hour 15 minutes between naps.  Sometimes my LO is only up long enough to eat and get a diaper change.  If my LO gets too tired she seems to "fight" sleep a bit.

  • as others have stated, that is way too much time. no more than 2 hours of awake time at this age is generally appropriate during the day.work on getting her to nap more!

  • Until Sunday, he was sleeping for so much of the day. Suddenly, on Monday and Tuesday (today), he is awake for 7 hours straight in the day! So strange!

That doesn't seem normal to me..  my son never slept much during the day, but he cat napped a ton.

If it were me and it happens again... that is, you're on 3-4+ hours of no sleep, I'd put your LO in the carseat and drive on a road where you don't really stop (eg, interstate).  That, or take a long walk in a stroller.

I would NOT make a habit of driving to induce sleep, but usually driving does help us induce sleep.   Oh, and if you don't have a rock n play, I cannot recommend it enough.

  • My almost three week old does the same thing. STTN since day one her schedule is the same every day. Up at 7 awake and cluster feeding until 11 no sleeping at all. Sleep from 11 until 4 with me waking to feed/change every 1.5 hours. Awake for short periods of time until 7. Up and cluster feeding until 10 asleep all night. This reAlly freaked me out ( she is number 4) my only child who slept thru the  night before age 2!!  I went to Pediatrician just for this on Monday. She checked her and said she is gaining weight and is perfectly healthy  she is even cognitively advanced for her age! I guess they measure this by how she tracks objects and copy's facial expressions. The doc said as long as she is growing and not upset during her extended wakeful periods let her be

    Hope this helps

  • That is way too much, to the point where I'd be putting a call into my pediatrician.
