I made 2 linen slings and a BBSlen wrap conversion sling loosely using Jan's DIY pages at sleepingbaby.net. I didn't love the directional pleats though, so I did my own symmetrical pleat.
Make sure to use rings from slingrings.com and use a fresh needle in your sewing machine. I would also suggest making it a little longer than you think you need because you can always hem it. I liked a longer sling when DS was smaller and he nursed and slept in it a lot because the tail was a built-in cover but as he got bigger and it was more for quick up and downs we didn't need the extra length.
ETA - Also on length - if you plan on using the sling through toddlerhood keep in mind that you'll need more length than when they are tiny and if other people might use your sling (daddy, grandma, sitter etc), take their size into consideration as well.
This is my niece wearing a linen with the symmetrical pleats.
