sleep method other than CIO

my son sleeps through the night as long as he's in bed with us.  in the evenings, if he is already asleep, we can put him in his crib, but as soon as he wakes that's all she wrote.  he won't go back to sleep until we move him to our bed, and the he sleeps like a log.

so last night we tried to start cry it out - and he cried and screamed until he threw up.  i just can't bring myself to do that with him.

what have you used other than CIO?

Re: sleep method other than CIO

  • Where does he nap?  Maybe you can start naps in his crib?  Does he go in his crib at all?  I'm just wondering if maybe you can start putting him in his crib randomly throughout the day?  Maybe when you throw a load of laundry in, or fold his clothes in his room while he's playing in his crib.  Thats how we got dd to like her pack and play.  We just put her in for short amounts of time to play and eventually she got the hang of it.  It's really tough.  DD is really good in her crib and doesn't mind it at all so if she's crying, I know there is a reason.

  • I second the NCSS. It takes a little longer than CIO, but I like it. CIO doesn't work for DD either. I tried it and she just screamed for about an hour until she was shaking so hard I thought she was having a seizure. She also kept falling over and banging her head on the crib. Definitely not for us.

We recently had a bit of a setback when DH went out of town, but I think the NCSS is starting to work for us. It's worth a shot.

  • So glad I found this! My ds is doing the same thing, except he used to sleep in his crib just fine! He has sttn since he was 4 mo old and most nights goes to bed on his own without a problem. We used the CIO method when he was younger and it worked great! It was hard at first but he would go to sleep on his own without crying after a while. He's always not slept well when he's getting teeth, but this is different. When he does get up it's early in the am and we have just put him in bed with us for a few hrs. Here recently though, we put him down with his normal bed time routine, but he will wake up just and hr or so later and it's a battle after that! He'll sleep as long as he's in our bed and sometimes he'll fall asleep and I can move him back to his crib. We've spent all night back and forth trying to get him to sleep and sleep ourselves! I'm on the verge of a mental breakdown!
  • Did you try Ferber or extinction CIO? If you didn't read the Ferber book I recommend it. I tried NCSS and Good Night Sleep Tight. I had very little sucess, until I hit the end of my rope and read the Ferber book. After 5 months of co-sleeping she's now sleeping in the crib. Good luck!
